COPY HOLDER.
(Application filed July 26, 1900.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EZRA WING, OF OCONOMOWOO, WISCONSIN.
COPY-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 682,656, dated September 1'7, 1901.
Application filed July 26, 1900. Serial No. 24,881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern-.-
Be it known that I, EZRA WING, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Oconomowoc, in the county of Waukesha and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Copy-Holders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention has for its object to provide to a simple and economical copy-holder that is adjustable as to height and may when not in use be folded into a compact body; and it consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts as to be herein- :5 after described with reference to the accompanying drawings and subsequentlyclaimed.
In the drawings, Figurel represents a side elevation of my copy-holder when in use; and Fig. 2 a similar view, but showing the device are folded. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail plan view of the adjustable table.
Referring by letters to the drawings, A is the base, which is composed of three or more feet. B is the standard projecting centrally therefrom and is preferably made in two sections, as shown. The upper section B is connected to the lower section B by a hinge a, and diametrically opposite said hinge is a hook or clasp b, which engages a pin 0 upon the upper section, said joint being for the purpose of locking the standard when it is in use and folding the same, so as to take up the least possible room when not in use.
The section B of the standard above the hinge is reduced and made rectangular in cross-section for the purpose of receiving an adjustable table 0, which has a rectangular opening 0, at one end thereof, through which the standard passes. This opening is slightly larger than the standard, so that when it is desired to adjust the table it is only necessary to lift it slightly at the outer end, causing the faces of the opening 0 to become parallel to the faces of the standard, thereby 5 making a quick adjustment to any elevation that may be desired, and by reason of the weight of said table, as soon as the operator releases it, it will automatically lock upon the standard, the upper edge (1 and the diametrically lower edge e of the opening a pinching the standard and holding said table firmly in a vertical direction, the squared opening 0 at the same time serving to prevent any swinging of the table in a horizontal direc tion, it being an essential feature of my copyholder that the manuscript upon the table should always be directly in front of the operator or student.
A clamping-spring F is secured to the table for the purpose of retaining the manuscript; but any suitable holder may be substituted.
The table at one end is provided with an eye f, which when the device is folded, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, serves as a hanger for the same by hooking it over the in c. p My device, while especially designed for holding manuscript for type-writers, may also be used as a book-rest and may be placed beside a chair for the convenience of stu- 7o dents, &c.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a folding copy-holder, a squared upper 7' 5 standard B and an adjustable table Oadapted to be moved upon said standard, having at one end a squared opening at a right angle to its face, the parallel surfaces of said H squared opening at right angles to the length 8e of the table, serving to lock the same vertically upon the corresponding parallel squared surfaces of the aforesaid squared standard, the remaining parallel surfaces of said squared opening serving to lock said table upon the remaining squared surfaces of the standard against horizontal movement, abase having a central rigid standard hinged to the aforesaid squared standard, a hook I) pivoted to the former and a pin 0 projecting from 0 the latter whereby they are normally locked in an upright position, and an eye f at the end of the table whereby when the said table is removed from the hinged standard and the latter is unlocked and folded, the former is 5 suspended from the pin 0 in a compact body substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand, at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wis- 1c 6 cousin, in the presence of two witnesses.
EZRA WING.
