The. several bolts herein referred to and which pass through the slot 2 of the standard 1, have a squared portion which fits between the walls of said slot, as clearly indicated in Figs. 3 and 6; such construction holding the bolts against turning when they are moved relatively to the slot 2, and while the thumb nuts are tightened to hold the connected parts to the standard.

.When of wood, I preferably provide the block 7 with a metal reinforcing plate 7, elearlyshown in Fig. 2, andin the sectional -view, Fig. 6. If desired, the blocks 20 and 204 may be reinforced in any suitable man- ;ner-to'prevent splitting and, as may be readily understood, any of the parts of my im proved easel may be made of metal without departing from my invention.

I claim:

1. In an easel, the combination ofa slotted standard, legs pivotally connected to the;low er end of said standard and adapted to lie in parallel :relation to said standard when folded, braces having their lower ends pivotally eonnectedto saidlegs, a block slidably mounted with respect tosaid standard and connected to the upper endsof said braces,

6. In an easel, the combination of a slotted standard, a series of legs pivotally connected to the lower end of the same and foldable'in parallel relation to said standard, adjustable connections between said legsand the standard; the latter being 'slottedto permit adjustment of said connections, bolts having squared portions disposed in the slot of said standard and holding said connectionsthereto, and thumb nuts therefor retainingsaid connections in position.

7. In a structure suchas set forth in claim 1, a retaining rod carried by the upper end of the standard, an adj ustable'block towhich said retaining rod is connected, and retaining means carried by said adjustable block for holding said retaining rod in adjusted positions. V
