TO ALL WHOM IT MAY C'ONCERN:
Bc it known that I, J. I-I. GODWIN, of Scotland Neck, in the county of Halifax, and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and improved Oil-Can; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full7 clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had.
to the accompanyingdrawings, forming part otrtliis specification.
rlhis invention relates to a new and improved oil-can, of that class which is more especially designed for oiling machinery, and is generally ,constructed fof rather small dimensions, so that it may be conveniently handled andplaced in drawers, on small shelves, or kept on a workbench, without inonopolizing much room.
The present invention consists in constructing the oil-can in such a manner thatit may be placed and kept in quite shallow drawers, be conveniently carried in the pocket, if necessary, be capable of being manufactured at a less cost than those in present use, and still be stronger and more durable.
In the accompanying drawing a side sectional View of my invention is shown.
I I construct the body or main portion of my improved can of cylindrical form, and of sheet metal, being bent in circular form, and having its -ends 'secured together by solder, or otherwise, constitutes the side aof the body, and the circular end pieces b are secured to'each edge of a by solder or otherwise. Tin plate will be the material used for ordinary cans, and copper and brass for finished or expensive ones. The body ofthe can has within it onc or more spiral springs, A, which serve to prevent the end pieces b b from being pressed inward to such a degree as to lose their elasticity, and admit of the body being compressed laterally for the ejection of oil an indefinite period of time. The body of' the can is provided with a nozzle, B, Iof any suitable or desired length, attached to the sidea of the body7 so as to be slightly inclined, suiiiciently so to admit of its outer end being a trifle above one end piece, b, which is uppermost. By this means the oil will be prevented from escaping from the can when the same is laid in a horizontal position, as will be fully understood by referring to the drawing. 1
The oil-can thus constructed may be carried inthe pocket without any inconvenience whatever, and will be altogether more desirable for mechanics than the ordinary conical-shaped ones. It will also be very convenient for sewing-machine use, as it may be placedin quite a shallow drawer, such as many sewing-machine stands are provided with. As regards cheapness ot" construction, that is manifest. The body may be madecheaper than a common blacking-box, as the side a is composed of one strip only, whereas a blacking-box has two strips, one for the body and one for the lid. The nozzle maybe constructed and applied at a small cost. The spririg or springs A eie'ctually prevent the sinking in of the end pieces under frequent compression.
What I claimtas new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
.An oil-can constructed with a shallow cylindrical body and an inclined nozzle, in combination with the spring or springs A, placed within the body of the said oil-can, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
I J. H. GODWIN.
