Description

Nirnn PATENT Ormea. l
CHARLES J. HAUGKF WILLIAMSBURG, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN OILERS.
Spcciiication forming part ot' Letters Patent No. 511.540, dated May 8, 1866,
To all toll/om it may concern.:
Be it known that I, CHARLES J. HAUCK, of
/Villiamsburg, in the county or" Kin gs an d State ot' New York, have invented a new and Improved Oiier; and l do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descrip` tion thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference beinghad to theaccompanyil'lgdrawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l represents a vertical central section of this invention, the line n0 a', Fig. 2, indicating the plane of section. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same, taken in the plane indicated by the line y y, Fig. l.
Similar letters ot' reference indicate like parts.
This invention consists in the arrangement of a false bottom and spring, in combination with an annular lip formed at the inner edge of a hole in the real bottom ot' an oiler, in such a manner that by said spring the false bottom is held down upon the lip, and the elasticity of said false bottom is thereby preserved, and furthermore the false bottom is protected from injury by the lip, and the oiler remains tight and in good working order for a long time.
A represents an oiler of that class the body ot' which is spun or struck up ot' one single piece ot' sheet metal in a hen'iispherical shape, as shown in Fig. l of the drawings, though it must be remarked that my invention is applicable to oilers of any suitable shape or description. The bottom a ot' this oiler is perforated with a central hole, b, large enough to admit the thumb or finger, and the edge of this hole is turned up and made'to form an annular lip, c. Ou this lip rests the false bottom d, which is soldered or otherwise fastened to the body,
of the oiler at its circumference, and a spring, e, bears down upon the center of said false bottom, holding the same in contact with the lip c. pressing on the false bottom from the outside it is forced in against the action of the spring c, and the content-s ot' the oiler are forced out.
The spring e is applied in such a. manner that the same is not liable to lose itsI elasticity, and by the lip c and bottom a the false bottom d is protected, so that the same is not liable to wear out and become leaky, and an oil-can is thus obtained which works perfect t'or a long time.
I do not claim, broadly, as my invention the application of a spring to the bottom of an oiler, since this has been done before; but in ordinary oilers provided with springs there is only one bottom, which is acted upon by the spring and caused to bulge out in the center, so that the same after a short time wears ont and becomes leaky. In my oiler the spring acts on the false bottom, which is fully protected from injury and not liable to wear out.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
An oiler provided with a false bottom, d, protected and supported by the annular lip c,
in combination with the springe, applied substantially as and for the purposes described.
The above specification ot' my invention signed by me this 26th day of February, 1866.
