Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
PEPPER-Box.
Specieation forming part 0f Letters Patent No. 54,5] 7, dated May S, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J AMES FELLOWS, of the city of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pepper-Boxes for Table Use; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the con struction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this speeicatioinin which- Figure l is a central vertical section of the said improved pepper-box, and Fig. 2 a plan view of the top or upper end of the same, like letters of reference indicating' the same parts when in both gures.
The object of my improvement is to provide against the common defect in pepperboxcs for table use in that the perforated covers are liable to shake off in legitimately using the boxes, and consequently to allow a discharge of a large and wasteful quantityof the pepper.
My invention consists, substantially, as hereinafter described, in the production of a pe'pper-box for table use having its perforated cover pivoted to the top of the box in such a manner that it can be moved aside` with "facility in order to open the box for the purpose of supplying it With pepper, and with like facility be closed again and secured, so as to prevent the possibility of its becoming displaced or moved by legitimately using the box.
In the drawings, A B is a sheet-metal pepper-box of the common form, and a its perforated cover as improved.
The body ofthe box A B is made open at its p upper end, and has its upper edge flanged inward, so as to form a flat bearing, b, for the perforated cover a. The perforated cover a also has a flat edge, d2, corresponding with the flanged edge b of the body of the box. The cover and the body are attached together by means of a pivot, b2, which passes through the flange b', and is soldered fast to the inner side of the body, so as to allow the cover c to be readily turned either to the right or left, as ini dicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 2, the flat edge a2 of the cover sliding on the iianged edge b of the body.
A small projection, a3, on the cover a passes between the plates of a spring-clamp, b3, (which is soldered fast to the body, or to the handle in this case, of the box,) in closing the box, and thus the said cover is secured in place when the box is closed, so as to prevent the possibility of its moving in legitimately using the box.
This is a very desirable improvement in pepper-boxes for table use, and its cost of construction is less than that of the old mode of applying the perforated cover.
Having thus fully described my improvement, what I cla-im as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A pepper-box for table use having its perforated cover constructed and applied so as to operate in combination therewith, substantially as and for the purpose described.
JAMES FALLOWS.
