- This invention pertains to silos and has for its object the following: to provide a door construction that may be manufactured and kept in stock and be of substantially uniform size and construction and yet adapted to fit openings in the silo body of substantially uniform size and be adapted for adjustment thereto; to provide a door that will be interchangeable from one opening in the silo to another and adapted for either a right or a left hand swing; to provide a door that may be readily adjusted at its hinged points to adapt the same to fit the opening in the silo body when for any reason the openings are irregular in form; to provide an improved means for fastening the door in the opening in the silo body so as to make the same air tight and to provide a general connecting construction whereby the door and the silo construction are brought into effective relations with each other to accomplish the purposes named.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 2, 1915.
Application filed November 18, 1913. Serial No. 801,763.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, ALONzo R. MAoCAL- LUM and Mnnm'r'r H. EGGLESTON, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Spokane, in the county of Spokane and State of Washing-ton, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Silos, of which the following is. a specification.
This invention pertains to silos and has for its object the following: to provide a door construction that may be manufactured and kept in stock and be of substantially uniform size and construction and yet adapted to fit openings in the silo body of substantially uniform size and be adapted for adjustment thereto; to provide a door that will be interchangeable from one opening in the silo to another and adapted for either a right or a left hand swing; to provide a door that may be readily adjusted at its hinged points to adapt the same to fit the opening in the silo body when for any reason the openings are irregular in form; to provide an improved means for fastening the door in the opening in the silo body so as to make the same air tight and to provide a general connecting construction whereby the door and the silo construction are brought into effective relations with each other to accomplish the purposes named.
WVith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of the construction and combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, pointed out in the claim and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1, is a front view of the silo door in place in a broken-away view of the silo body, Fig. 2, is a vertical, sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, Fig. 3, is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, with the showing of a larger portion of the silo body and the door shown in two additional positions by dotted lines, Fig. 4;, is a side view of one of the brackets attached to the door to which the hangers are attached, a broken away view of the hanger and the pin connecting the two, Fig. 5, is a top plan view of the same, Fig. 6, is a front view of a keeper detached, which is attached to the door and used to tighten and retain the door in air-tight relation with the silo body over the door openings, and Fig. 7, is a side view of the same.
The door body 10 may be of ordinary constructlon with vertically arranged reinforclng strips 11', excepting that the edges 12 of the door 10 are calculated to overlap the walls 13 of the silo body 1 1 instead of fitting into the opening 15, thereby closing the open-' ing 15, and in that sense the door may be said to close'rather than fit the opening. This permits of doors varying in size being used for the purpose of closing the same opening. Where door openings 15 are provided one directly above the other, the walls 13 are extended across between the openings as at 16 and plates 17 provided to surface the same to make more rigid the general construction. Within the openings 15 at the four corners and at the intersection of the walls 13 and the extensions 16 are secured angle irons 18 through which are provided vertically arranged openings 19, these openings 19 extending also through the wall extensions 16. Extending vertically across the opening 15 into the openings 19 is a rod 20 threaded at each end for a substantial distance as at 21. Swung on to the rod 20 as a pivot are hangers 22 supported by the burs 23 on the threaded portion 21. Attached to the door 10 are brackets 2A to which also are attached the hangers 22, by means of the pins 25 as pivots. A packing strip 26 of a fibrous substance is attached to the rim of the door 10 and is adapted to come in contact with the inner surface of the wall 13 when the door is closed as an aid in effecting an air-tight contact of the parts.
A keeper 27 is pivoted to each the top and bottom of the door 10 at horizontally central positions thereon, such keepers having beveled surfaces 28 and pivoted off of the center,
as at 29, forming an eccentric. By manual force upon the handle 30, the bodies of the keepers 27 are forced over the plates 17, the beveled surfaces 28 serving to draw the door outwardly in proportion as the keepers are forced outwardly over the plates 17. The door 10 is adapted to swing inwardly as shown in Fig. 3 where the dotted lines 10* indicate one position of the door, rather an intermediate position of the same between an open and closed position, and the dotted lines 10 indicate a completely open position of the same, the opening 15 being completely cleared of the door 10. As illustrated, the door opens to the right but the same may be adapted to swing to the left by changing the rod 20 to the left side of the opening 15. In that case the brackets 2& should be shifted to the right of the centrally located reinforcing strip 11 in order that the door 10 may completely clear the opening 15 when swung inwardly. Burs 31 on the threaded portions 21 of the rod 20 serve to retain the rod 20 in a rigid vertical position within the openings 19 and by means of the adjustment of the burs 23, the hangers 22 may be elevated to raise or lower the door 10. Bangs 32 are attached to the door 10 by means of screws or bolts 33 providing a lad der as a means for mounting the silo. Then the door 10 is open as shown by the dotted lines 10 and 10 of Fig. 3 the door 10 may be readily lifted from the pins and placed in another opening. Furthermore, if it is desired to use the door as a loose one the hangers 22 and the rod 20 and burs 23 and 31 may be dispensed with.
What we claim is,
A silo and its complemental openings, transverse plates provided for said openings, serving as top and base edges therefor, vertical bores in alinement provided for said plates and at one side thereof, an anchor adjustably secured in said bores,'hangers adjustably mounted thereon, a cover mounted on said hangers, brackets secured to said cover and pivotally secured .to said hangers, substantially as described.
