An object of this invention is toy produce a memorial positioned above the ground and provided with a novel form of entrance closure to the said memorial.

' Another object of this invention is Vto provide a memorial in which the entrance closure constitutes one of the side walls thereof.

Another objectv of this invention is to piovide an entrance closure for a memorial comprising separable sections pivotally mounted at the corners thereof and adapted to swing inwardly against the Walls of the memorialv chamber. j

A further object of this invention is to produce a memorial, the entrance closure of which is formed flush with the side wall thereof and prevents the admission of water and other foreign extraneous substances which would tend to deteriorate the structure.

The invention further consists in the novel elevating means for the respective sep-arable hinged sections whereby the elo-l sures can be elevated to clear the abutting flange at the base of the memorial and then swung inwardly as will more fully hereinafter appear. ,v

With these and other objects in view, the invention further consists in the novel arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter described and pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring to the drawings which show by way of illustration an Vembodiment of this invention, Figure 1 is a horizontal sectional plan view through a sepulchral memorial, and Fig. 2 is a` front 'elevation of a memorial, the respective hinged entrance closures and the mechanism for elevating the same being shown in section.

In the production of memorials, it has been found advantageous `to produce a monumental effect, and the present mechanism for gaining access to the said memorial has been concealed within the memorial so as to maintain all of the monti-- mental and artistic embellishmentsand'conrfigurations. To that end the present invention has been, designed and comprises a hollow memorial 1 provided with rear wall 2, end walls 3, 4, and a. front or entrance closure 5. lThis memorial may be constructed of such monumental material as may be found most desirable and preferably comprises a base 6 and intermediate section 7 which includes the walls, and the cap or top 8. The size and generaldesign of this memorial may be varied and modified and I do not vlimit myself to the exact illustration set forth herein.

The entrance closure to the said memorial comprises oppositely arranged door-sections 9 and 10 andan intermediate or supple'- mental door section 11 interposed therebe-` tions 13 thereon, as may be desired. This l vintermediate door section is hinged at 14 to one of the oppositely arranged door sections hereinbefore referred to, and is movable therewith. When the entrance closure is in the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1, the intermediate door sectionll is in alinement with the respective door sections 9 and 10 and is designed to snugly engage the ends of the said oppositelyarranged sections. The oppositely arranged doors 9 and 10 are pivotally mounted on vertical pintles or shafts'fl, 16. These shafts are suitably journaled in upper and lower bearings 17 and 18, respectively, as shown in Fig. 2..

Suitable recesses 19 are provided in the' respective door sections 9 and 10 at the pivotal,

ends thereof and are adapted to receive bearing and supporting'plates 20. These plates are provided with tubular internally threaded extensions 21 through which the threaded portions 22 of the vertical shafts 15 and 16 pass. The door sections are cut away as at 23 so as to provide access for suitable rod-engaging means for elevating the respective doors, the operation of which will now be described. The elevating mechanism comprises the pivotal shafts l5 and 16, the screw threaded portions provided thereon and holes 24: provided in said shaft to receive an operating or turning bar as will be readily understood.

In operation, it will be seen that upon turning the respective shafts l5 and 16, by the insertion of the bar in the holes 24 the door sections 9 and 10 will be elevated. A recess 25 is provided on the underside of the cap piece 8 to receive the respective door sections when they are elevated. This elevation of the door will be suilicient to clear the floor and permit the respective door sections to swing inwardly. These doors when in closed position are normally lower than the floor section of the'memorial to prevent the admission of water and the beating in of other material. When the doors have been elevated to the level of the floor, they can be swung back as shown in dotted lines in Fig. l and be positioned against the respective walls 2, 3 and 4 of the respective memorial.

From the foregoing, it will be seen that l have provided a sepulchral memorial, the monumental design of which can be adhered to and at the same time ready entrance thereto can be secured.

It is obvious that certain minor changes may be made in the form and construction as well as the ornamentation oit the invention without departing from the material principles involved.

Suitable casket lowering mechanism can be provided in the saidmemoriah and other compartments beneath the ground for the reception of the caskets can be used in connection with this memorial as will be readily understood.

Having thus described my invention7 what lf claim and desire to secure by Letters Patl. ln a sepulchral memorial provided with an entrance opening including a rabbeted sill, a closure for' the opening arranged to seat in the rabbet, pivot means constituting a hinge for the closure, and coacting means carried by the pivot and closure and arranged to primarily raise the closure from the rabbet to permit swinging of said closure.

2. ln a sepulchral memorial provided with swinging' access means, said access means being movable vertically into operative and inoperative positions, a pivot, and coacting means carried by the access means and pivot and arranged to effect vertical movement of said access means.

3. In a sepulchral memorial, a swinging closure, pivot means constituting a hinge for the closure, said pivot means being arranged to rotate at times independently ot the closure and at times with the closure7 and coacting elements carried by the closure and pivot means and arranged to effect movement of the closure longitudinally of the pivot means upon independent rotation of the latter.

4. ln a sepulchral memorial having a closure, a nut carried4 by the closure, and a pivot rod for the closure and rotatable independently of said closure, said pivot rod having athreaded portion engaging the nut and being provided with means for the connection of an operating device.
