-DJUSTABLE BARREL-COVER.
JPECIFICATION forming P t of Letters Patent No. 249,939, dated November 22, 1881. PT -cation filed February 21, 1881. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIs F. HOOD, of Deerfield, county of Lenawee, and St t of Michigan, have invented a new and u f I provement in AdjustableBarrel-Oq d I declare the following to be a full l d act description of the same, sum; as ill bl others skilled in the art to whi h it pertains t make and use it, reference, b i b d t th p y g' lgifwhicli form apart of this specification.
The obje t f my invention is to provide a barrel-cover which may be fitted to barrels of various sizes; and it consists in the combination, with a stationary cover-section, of a flexible band secured thereto and adjustable to lit barrels of various sizes, and a movable sect-ion pivoted centrally to said stationary section, and adapted to close and open a portion of the top of the barrel, as will be hereinafter more particularly described.
In the accompanying draw ings,Figure1 is a perspective view of my improved barrel-cover with the movable section partly swung open. Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the cover with the movable section closed. Fig. 3 is a view in elevation of the top portion of a barrel with the cover attached.
The letter B designates the stationary cover- "section, which is about semicircular in shape,
and preferably made of sheet metal. To the under side of this section, near the middle of its curved edge, is secured edgewise the flexible band 0, which is also preferably made of sheet metal. This band i'sintended to embrace the upper margin of a barrel, as shown in Fig.
3. At one of its ends, and near its other end, the band 0 is provided with outwardly-projectin g ears 0 0, through both of which passes a bolt, 0 provided with a nut, in the usual manner, in order that the ears may be drawn together or allowed to separate, to enable the band to embrace a barrel of greater or less size,
as required. prefer to have one end portion of the band projecting beyond the car, as shown at 0 Figs. 1 and 2, in order that the projecting portion may serve as a bearing upon which the other end may slide in tighteningthe band; but this projecting portion may be omitted without departing from my invention.
The letterD designates a centrally-pivoted cover-section, secured to the stationary section by a pivot, D, and adapted to turn about this pivot, so as to open and close about one-half of the top of the barrel. The section D is of a size a little larger than the largest space which the band can embrace beyond the stationary section, and may be provided with a knob by which it may be turned, as at c, and a stop, as atf, for limiting its movement.
I am aware that a barrel-cover has been composed ot a stationary section attached to a band, and a door-section pivoted to said stationary section, and I do not claim such con struction, broadly.
What I claim is 1. An adjustable barrel-cover composed of a stationary segmental section attached to an adjustable flexible band adapted to embrace the exterior of the top of a barrel, and a movable section pivoted to said stationary section,
and adapted to swing over it, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the stationary and movable cover-sections, of the flexible band secured to the former and provided with the ears, and the end portion projecting beyond one of said ears, and a bolt passing through said ears, substantially as described.
In testimony whereofI sign this specification in the presence of two witnesses.
, WILLIS F. HOOD.
Witnesses:
