FRANK STANLEY, OF NEWCASTLE, INDIANA.
CASKET-LID HINGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 5, 1909.
Patented Feb. 8, 1910.
Serial No. 481,232.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK STANLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newcastle, in't-he county of Henry and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Casket-Lid Hinges, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to produce a hinge for the lids of burial caskets by means of which said lids may be thrown back from V the top of the casket, so as to uncover the same, and support said lid in a substantially upright position at the back of the casket with a considerable portion of the lid below the upper plane of the open casket.
The accompanying drawings illustrate my invention.
Figure 1 is a perspective View of a couch casket equipped with my invention. Fig. 2 a transverse section, the usual lining of the casket being omitted.
In the drawings, 10 indicates a casket of any desired construction, having a lid or cover 11.
My improved hinge comprises a bracket 12 secured to the under face of the cover 11 at or near its middle, the particular point of attachment however being immaterial and depending wholly upon the proportion of the cover to be carried below the plane of the open top. Pivoted to bracket 12, on a horizontal axis, is a link 13 which is bent at its middle 14 so that the two ends of the lever incline upwardly. Link 13 is then pivoted in any suitable manner on a horizontal pivot 15, to the inner face of the end wall of the casket. I find it desirable to associate with this construction a guard strip or plate 16 which lies at a short distance from the inner face of the end wall of the casket so that, when the cover is in final position, link 13 will pass down between the inner face of the end wall of the casket and the guard plate 16, thus insuring against the link 13 catching in the lining of the casket.
In operation the parts will occupy the position shown in full lines in Fig. 2 when the cover is in closed position. When the cover is raised it will have two horizontal pivotal supports, one on bracket 12 and one at 15, so that the cover may be readily thrown back to the position indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2, where a material portion of the cover lies below the plane of the open top and the upwardly projecting portion of the cover will form a support or backing for flowers, etc. The cover in this position is firmly supported by links 18 which rest upon the upper edge of the rear wall of the casket.
I claim as my invention:
1. A hinge comprising a bracket adapted to be secured to the under face of a cover member, a link pivoted to said bracket at one end, a guard plate, a pivot passing through one end of the guard plate and link, and means for fastening the guard plate to a supporting member.
2. A hinge comprising a bracket adapted to be secured to the under face of a cover member, a link bent at its middle pivoted to said bracket at one end, a guard plate, a pivot passing through one end of the guard plate and link, and means for fastening the guard plate to a supporting member.
In witness whereof, I, have hereunto set my hand and seal at Newcastle, Indiana, this 26 day of Feb, A. D. one thousand nine hundred and nine.
