Description

G. B. MARTIN.
ROOF FOR SILOS OR THE LIKE.

CHARLES E. MARTIN, OF MANSFIELD, OHIO.
ROOF FOR SILOS OR THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 21, 1913.
Patented May 12, 1914.
Serial No. 749,910.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES E. MARTIN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Mansfield, in the county of Richland and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Roofs for Silos or the like, of which the followingis a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful in'iprovements in roofs for silos or the like, and is an improvement on Letters Patent No. 1,032,012, granted to me July 9, 1912.
The primary object of the present inven tion is to provide a roof of the type set forth, in which the opening of the roof is covered by a member which can be easily and quickly moved to cover or uncover the opening, and to this end the invention resides in new and improved means for connecting the member to the roof structure in such way that its operation as above set forth can be effected.
In my prior patent the objection is presented of possible corrosion of the ring which is movably mounted on the vcntilator body, making it difficult to shift the closure member to which the ring is secured, in covering and uncovering the roof opening. The present invention therefore aims to provide means for connecting the closure member to the roof structure, whereby the aforementioned objection is overcome.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a fragmen' tary side elevation of a silo and the roof structure thereof; and Fig. 2 is a detailed top plan view of the ventilator, which latter is partly broken away, showing the means for connecting the closure member to said ventilator.
The silo body 1 has a conical corrugated roof 2, which latter is provided with an opening 3, a ventilator 4: being attached. to the apex of the roof and being of any approved form, all of which aforementioned parts are disclosed in my prior patent above mentioned. The closure member 5 is formed of a corrugated section of metal and has its inner end pivotally secured by means of a pivotal pin 6 to the lower leaf 7 of a hinge 8, the upper leaf 9 of which hinge is rigidly secured by rivets 10 to the body of the ventilator 4. The hinge therefore has no lateral movement, but is stationary with relation to the roof structure, while the closure member 5 is not only movable laterally of the roof structure, but is also movable vertically in the plane of an arc. As shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings the closure member 5 can be moved from the full to the dotted line position about the pivot pin 6, and since the latter presents such an extremely small surface subject to corrosion, it will be evident that the possibility of such corrosion is reduced to a minimum, and in any event should corrosion take place, to and fro lateral movement of the closure member 5 would readily remove the corrosion and allow the desired easy movement of the member In addition the means disclosed in the present invention presents the advantages of simplicity, economy in material, and consequent reduction in the cost of manufacture of the means disclosed in my aforementioned patent, aside from the other advantages hereinbeforc set forth.
lVhat is claimed is:
1. In combination with the roof structure of silos or the like, comprised of a series of overlapping tapered corrugated sections which roof, has an opening, and a pivotal closure member for the opening, single horizontal pivotal means for connecting the closure member to the roof consisting of a hinge having one leaf rigidly secured to the roof structure, and having its other lcaf pivotally secured to the closure member by a single vertical pivot whereby the latter may be moved vertically with respect to the roof and laterally thereof about said single pivots.
2. In combination with a roof structure of silos or the like, comprised of a series of overlapping tapered corrugated sections which roof has an opening, and a closure member for said opening, single horizontal pivotal means for hingcdly connecting said closure member to the roof and single vertical means for pivotally connecting the closure member to said means to allow the closure member to move vertically of the roof and laterally thereof as well, said vertical and lateral movements being accomplished by single pivots.
3.
