HENRY Gr. BAUM, OF YORK, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOE. TO IPU'LLMAN MOTOR CAR COMPANY, OF YORK, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF FENNSYLVANIA.
v HINGE FOR A UTOMOBILE-HOODS.
Specification of Letters Patent. Application filled September 20, 1911.
Patented Nov.25,1913. Serial N0. 650,315.
To all whom t may concern: C
Be it known, that I, HENRY G. BAUM, a citizen of the United States, residing at York, in the county of York and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain neW and useful lImprovements in Hinges for Automobile-Hoods, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing. A
This invention relates to a hinge for use in the construction of hoods for covering and protecting the engine' in self-propelled vehicles, such as automobiles, and the invention relates more particularly to that class of hoods known as folding-hoods where the top and side members are hinged together.
The objects a hinge of this class that by the novel construction shall be rendered both `dust and water proof. A
Another object of the invention is to so hinge the side membersto the top members that the side members may be swung outward at an approximate rightangle to the side of the car, to give access to the engine without raising either of the top members.
Still another. object of the invention is to providek an automobile hood hinge of this class thatshall be cheap, durable and eiiicient, consisting of few parts.
With these and other objects in view, my invention ,consists in certain construction and combination of parts as will hereinafter be fully described and claimed in the annexed specification, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings which form a part of this application, of reference refer to corresponding parts in all of the views,- but it is fully understood that while I have here -described my invention as shown, that I do not confine myself to the exact design, as slight changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings :-Figure 1 is a detail perspective view of a portion of the top and side members'of an automobile hood embodying my invention. Fig. 2, is a bottom plan view of the same. Fig. 3, is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 4, is a crosssectional view taken on the line X-X of Fig. 3. Fig. 5, is a cross sectional view taken on the line Y--Y of Fig. it.
of theinvention are to provide and in which like'igures/d the knuc The outer edges of the roof or top member ,p are rolled inwardly to form a tube 6, which is provided with the cut out portions 7, which are adapted to receive the hinge knuckles 8,.that are formed on the `upper edge `of the side members 9; said side mem- 60 bers 9, being pivoted or hinged to the top or roof member 1, by a binding or pivot rodlO,
- which extends through the tube 6, and the hinge knuckles 8.
It will be noted that the cut out portions 7, of the tube 6, are of such form as to allow the -side members 9, to be `swung outwardly in an approximately horizontal position, and yet the top and outward side of said tube 6, is closed which renders the joint both water anddust'tight; as the tube 6, acts as an eaves ,for shedding the water; and furthermore as the hood is viewed from the side, the hinge joints'are hidden from view.
The inner diameter of the Atube 6, is the same size as the outside diameter of the knuckles 8, and thus the tube 6, embraces and swings upon the knuckles 8.
The tube 6, nearpits ends is slightly bent out of round to touch the rod 10, as shown in Fig. 1. .Y
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is ing two sheets of metal, the edge of one sheet being rolled to form a tube, a ro'd placed in said tube and spaced therefrom, cut-out portions on the inner and lowersides of said tube, said cut-out. portions bein spaced 90 slightly from the other sheet of t e hinge, tongues formed on the other sheet of metal, said ton es being bentto produce knuckles,
les being disposed within the openings in t-he tube, between the tube ,and-,the 95 nod, the free edges ofthe knuckles being spaced slightly from the first-mentioned sheet of said hinge, the cut-out portions and the tongues, being cut at corresponding angles, whereby a water proof and dust proof hinge is formed. In testimony whereof I atlix my signature presence of two witnesses.
HENRY e. BAUM.
