DAVID W. HAWKSWORTH, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO HUTCI-IINS CAR ROOFING COMPANY OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, A CORPORATION OF MICHIGAN.
CORNER CONSTRUCTION FOR FLANGED ROOFING SHEETS.
Application filed April 9,
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID W. HAWKS- WORTH, a citizen of the United States of America, residin at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and ate of Michigan, have mvented certain new and useful Improvements in Corner Construction for Flanged Roofing Sheets, of which the following 1s a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to. corner constructions for flanged sheets, being particularly designed for use in connection w1th car roofing sheets which have a flanged hatch opening therein. It is the object of the i'nventlon to provide a construction WhlCh may be easily applied to the corner and WlllCh not only strengthens the same, but forms a water-proo joint. To thls end the invention consists in the construction as hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of the sheet;
Figure 2 is a plan view thereof;
Figure 3 is a side elevation;
Figure 4 is a View similar to Figure 2, showing a modified construction;
Figure 5 is a side elevation thereof.
A is a roofing sheet; B are upstanding flanges formed on several sides of a hatch opening 0 in the sheet. These flanges are formed from a portion of the metal removed when forming the hatch opening, and consequently, the ends of the flanges are beveled, resulting from the miter cut in the sheet from Which they are formed.
To close the'opening in the corner so as to both mechanically reinforce the flanges and to form a weatherproof joint, I have provided the following construction: D is an angle bent sheet havin at its upper edge a return-bent flange E adapted to embrace the upper edges of the flange B. At the lower ends of the angle blade D are flanges F bent laterally outward therefrom and passing beneath the bottom of the sheet A. These bottom flanges will, therefore, hold the angle from upward displacement, while the return-bent flanges at the upper ed e will hold the angle from g displacement later- Specification of Letters Patent.

ally. Where a weather proof joint is required, the ends of the upstanding flanges may be soldered to the angle.
11 applying the corner reinforcement to sheet, it may either be first engaged with bottom of the sheet and crimped to the may be first applied to the upstanding flanges and the bottom flanges then bent into position. As shown in F igures 1, 2 and 3, the bottom flanges F are first engaged beneath the sheet and the upstanding portion of the angle is then returnbent to embrace the upstanding flanges of the sheet. With this construction the return-bent portions are severed from each other at the corner to facilitate bending. With the construction shown in Figure 4, the return-bent flange extends completely around the corner and is formed in advance of engagement with the upstanding flanges of the sheet. With this construction, therefore, the lower flanges F are bent beneath the sheet after the return-bent flange is engaged with the upstanding flanges thereof.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. The combination with a sheet having upstanding flanges at angles to each other, .of an angle member forming a corner for said sheet, being provided with return-bent flanges for embracing the upper edges of said upstanding flanges, and base flanges for extending beneath the sheet.
2. The combination with a sheet having upstanding flanges at an angle to'each other, of an angle bent corner section for bridging between said upstanding flanges, said section being provided with return-bent flanges at its upper end for embracing the upstanding flanges of said sheet, and laterally-extending flanges at the lower end for insertion beneath the bottom of the sheet.
3. The combination with a sheet having upstanding flanges at an angle to each other, of a corner reinforcement therefor, com prising an angle-bent member having base flanges extending outward beneath the sheet, and return-bent flanges at its upper end embracing the upstanding flanges of said sheet.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
DAVID W. 'HAWKSWORTH.
