UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES S. BRENNAN, OF ATTLEBORO, MASSACHUSETTS.
RUDDER FOR SAIL OR, OTHER. VESSELS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES S. BRENNAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Attleboro, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Rudders for Sail or other Vessels, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in rudders for sail or other vessels, and the object thereof is to provide a rudder which has a pivoted wing, combined with means associated with the rudder whereby the wing will be quickly moved upon operation of the rudder A further object of the invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive and efficient rudder of the type set forth, and one which will readily and quickly respond to the touch of the operator.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of the invention, partly broken away and in section, and Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
The rudder post 1 is secured to the stern of the vessel and has the usual operating member 2 secured to its upper end. The rudder 3 is secured to the lower end of the post 1 and has a pint-1e 4 depending from its lower side, which pintle is journaled in a bearing 5 that is secured to the vessel. A wing 6 is pivoted to the front end of the rudder 3 at 7, and has a tube 8 rigidly secured to its top side. A rod 9 is slidingly mounted in the tube 8 and has an eye 10 formed on its inner end, which eye receives the lower end of a fulcrumed pin 11, the latter being provided with a head 12 to pre vent disengagement between the pin and rod 9. The pin 11 may be secured in or journaled in the bearing 13 that is supported by the stern of the boat.
In operation, when movement is imparted to the rudder 3 through the medium of the post 1 and operating member 2 the outer end of the wing 6 will be given movement about its pivotal connection 7 with the rudder 3, for instance, as depicted in dotted lines in Fig. 2, which movement is the result of the connection that the wing has with the vessel, namely, the fulcrum pin 11 and the rod 9, the fulcrum pin 11 having a. relative stationary position with respect to the vessel, and the rod 9 having swinging movements about the fulcrum pin 11, and since the rod 9 is slidingly mounted in the tubular bear- Specification of Letters Patent.

ing 8 it will be seen that when the rudder is moved in either direction laterally of the vessel, the wing 6 will be given corresponding movement in the same direction, but at an angle to the rudder, which angle is greater relative to the longitudinal axis of the vessel than the angle which the rudder has with the longitudinal axis of the vessel, whereby the vessel will more quickly respond to the steering movements imparted by the operator to the operating member 2.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In combination with a vessel, a rudder pivoted relative to the vessel, a vertically disposed wing pivoted to the outer end of the rudder, a tube secured to the top side of the wing, a rod slidingly mounted in the tube and having an eye at its inner end, and a vertically disposed fulcrum pin carried by the vessel and receiving the eye of said rod and having a head on its lower end that engages the eye.
2. In combination with a vessel having a pivoted rudder, a wing pivotally connected to the rudder, a vertically disposed fulcrum pin carried by the vessel and terminating in spaced relation to the outer top side edge of the rudder, and means pivoted to the pin and slidably connected to the wing so as to move therewith and slide independently thereof whereby when the rudder is moved said means will move about the pin as a fulcrum and effect movement of the wing about its pivotal point.
3. In combination with a pivoted rudder and a wing pivotally connected to the rudder, a member connected to the wing so as to move therewith and slide independently thereof, and a fulcrum member for connection with the vessel having a pivotal connection with said slidable member.
4. In combination with a pivoted rudder and a wing pivotally connected to the rudder, a fulcrum member for connection with the vessel, and means pivoted to the fulcrum member and connected to the wing so as to move therewith and slide independently thereof whereby when the rudder is moved the said means will move about the fulcrum member and by sliding engagement with the wing move the latter relative to the rudder.
5. In combination with a pivoted rudder and a wing pivotally connected to the rudder, means connected to the wing so as to move therewith and slide independently thereof to operate same, and means for connection with the vessel in pivotal connection with said slidable means to actuate the lat- -f ter and thereby the wing When the rudder is moved.
6. In combination with a pivoted rudder and a Wing pivotally connected to the rudder, Wing operating means, means to mount said means on the top edge of the Wing so as to move therewith and slide independently thereof, and means to pivotally connect the first named means to the vessel disposed adjacent to the outer end of the rudder.
In testimony whereof I have signed my 15 name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES S. BRENNAN.
