CAP Fon MuclLAGE-BOTTLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 58,417, dated October 2, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS N. H'Icxcox, of Brooklyn, in the count-y of Kings and State of New York, have invented, made, and applied to use a certain new and useful Improvement in Caps for Mucilage-Bottles, 85e.; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the said invention, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, wherein- Figure l is a perspective view of my iinproved cap upon the handle of a brush, and Fig. 2 is a section of said cap and brushhandle.

Caps are required for bottles containing mucilage to keep out dust and prevent evaporation. The brush is usually within the bot-4 ile,- and the handle passes through the cap. In order to allow the brush to reach the muoiluge in the bottle as that is lessened in quantity by use from time to time, it is necessary that the brush-handle be movable through the l cap in order that the brush may at all times be suspended by the cap and only dip slightly into the niucilage.
The caps heretofore constructed have had a screw-thread in the opening for the handle; but this is notconvenient, because it is slow in its action, becomes clogged with the mucilage, and, being rigid, does not allow for any variation in the size of the handles of the brushes, and frequently the handles cannot be moved at all in said cap.
The nature of my said invention consists in a cap for mucilagebottles formed of sheetmetal, with a spring-lian ged hole for the brushhandle, said. spring-ange being formed from the sheet metal that is pressed back in forming the hole. This springflange around the hole for the brush-handle furnishes ihe friction necessary for suspending the brush, and allows the handle to be slid freely through said cap as required. for its adjustment, and in case of being too looseit can betightened by bending said spring-flange smaller, or the reverse, if I required.
In the drawings, a is the cap, struck up from a disk of sheet metal into the desired forni. In the central part of this cap is a hole for the handle b of the brush c. dis the spring-tiange, formed by turning up and extending segments of the metal bent back to form the hole in the cap for the brush. This may be done by an angular-pointed punch to perforate the sheet inet-al, and produce radial incisions, so that the teeth or segments may be formed intfya spring-ange by being stretched out by the punch within a cylindrical hole,` for the purposes and as aforesaid.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The sheet-metal cap for mucilage-bottles, Ste., formed with a spring-flanged hole for the brush-handle, as and for the purposes set forth.
