Description

@einen tats gatrnt @Him GEORGE W. BENNETT,OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO. lIlMSEhF, `GEORGE W. BECK, AND CHARLES S. BIRD.
Lettera Patent No. 68,158, dated August 27, 1867.
IMPnovMi-:NT 1N PAINT-eens.`
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN Be it known that I, GEORGE W. BENNETT, of Brooklyn, in Kings county, and4 Stato of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Paint-Cans, dto. and I do hereby declaro that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the sume, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part ot' this specification.
Figure 1 is an under side view of the cover of my improved paint-can.
Figure 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same, taken through the linie a: x, fig. 3.
Figure 3 is a top view of the same, the cover bei'ng removed. l
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention-has for its object to furnish an improvement in the construction of cans for paint and 'other purposes, by means of which the can in which-the paint or other substance is packed for storage or transportation becomes a. vessel from which it may be conveniently used; and it consists in the combination ofa cross-bar with the upper end or mouth of the can, and in the combination therewith of acover having a groove around its under side to receive and fit upon the upper` edge of the can, and having a screw attached toits centre which screws into a hole in the central part of the said cross-bar, thc whole being constructed andarrangcd ns hereinafter more fully described. Y
A represents the body of the can, about the construction of which there is nothing new. B is a bar, the
ends of which are secured to the opposite sides of the can A, nea'r its top, as shown in iig. 2. The bar B has a vertical hole formed through its central point, having a screw-thread cuit in it for the reception of the screw attached to the cover C. The cover C is made with a groove around its under Iside, near its edge, of sach a size as to tit upon the upper odge of the 'can A. is a screw, attached to the central point of the cover C in such a way as to be turned by turning the said cover about upon the mouth ofthe saidcan. The screwD may be attached to the cover C by making its head in the form of a cross-head, which cross-head is letinto the body of said cover, as shown in g. 2; or the screw D` may be attached to the cover C in any other convenient and riubstantial manner. By this construction, by turning thcvcovcr C aroundin one direction upon the top of thei can A, the screw D will be forced into the screw-hole in thebar B, drawing the said cover down closely upon the mouth'of the said canand tightly closing'it; and by turning thc cover C in thc other direction it will be detached from the can. It should be observed'l that thc bnr B may have a removable handle attached to it for convenience in handling it when the cover has been removed. The bar B also serves as a rest to support the paint-brush or other n tensil used in connection with'the said can when said utensil is not in use.
I claim as new, and desire to secure'by Letters Patcnti i.
l. The combination of the `cross-bar B, .having a screw-hole formed through its central part, with the upper part of the can A, substantiaily as herein shown and described and for the purpose sot forth.
2. The combination of the cover C, having a groove formed in its lower sido, near its edge, and having a screw, D, attached to its central part, with the cross-bar B and can A, substantially as herein shown and described and for the purpose setforth.
The above specification of my `invention signedbyme this 8th day of July, 1867.
GEO. w'. BENNETT.
