Beit known that I, GEORGE E. BEDELL, of Herkimer, in the county of Herkimer and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed-Couches; and I do hereby declare the following to be'a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use ro the same.

This invention relates to bed-couches, and has reference to the class having the appearance, when not in use, of a box-couch.

One object of the invention is to provide i5 improved means for permitting of readily converting the couch into a double bed having two corresponding spring-carrying sections positioned on the same horizontal plane and to enable one of said sections to be conzo veniently stored within the body or box of the couch beneath the other section and above the storage-space provided in the body or box.

A further object is to permit one of the spring-carrying sections to be easily removed for independent use as a cot.

The invention will be hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is 3o a view in perspective, showing the upper section raised and the lower section in position thereunder. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional View showing the two sections on the same horizontal line. Fig. 3 is asecondtransverse sectional view with the lower section within the couch and the upper section lowered. Figs. 4, 5, and 6 are details.

Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates the box or body, which is usually made of such 4o size as to provide storage-space for the bedclothing, dac. Y

2 is the lid, which is composed of what I shall term the upper spring-carrying section, hinged at one side to box 1 and also connected to the latter by suitable lifting or hinging mechanism, as 3. /Vithin the box at its ends are inclined guideways 4, preferably composed each of a board or strip secured on an incline to the end of the box. In 5o an opening in the frontof the box in line with the upper end of each guideway is a hinged block 5, to which is secured a side plate 6. When these blocks 5 are turned u p, they close the openings and when lowered constitute extensions of the guideways.

7 is a second or lower spring-carrying section of less length than the upper section, beneath which it is designed to fit within the box when not in use. To the ends of its longitudinal side bar 8 are secured lower rollers 6o 9 and side rollers 10, the former for running on the guideways 4 and the latter for bearing against the ends of the box. To the outer longitudinal side bar 11 of this lower section are secured legs 12, any suitable means being employed for retaining them in either a vertical position, as when in use, (see Fig. 2,) or horizontally against the side bar when this section is positioned within the box. (See Figs. 3 and 5.) Similar legs 13 may likewise 7o be attached to the side bar 8 to the end that the section 7 may be entirely removed from the box and used as a cot independently of the lid-section. Secured to the lower edge of this side bar are two or more angle-irons 14, which are held by screws 15, passed through longitudinal slots in the horizontal portions of said irons. The latter are designed to engage with and rest upon the upper edge of the front of the box when the section 7 is ex- 8o. tended, as shown in Fig. 2, and, together with the legs 12, take the weight of such section. When this section 7 is located within the box beneath the lid-section, its side bar 11 rests upon stops 16, secured to the inner side of the front of the box, the rollers 9 being then at the innerlowered ends of the guideways 4 In practice the lid section is raised, as shown in Fig. 1, and the outer side of the lower section 7 is elevated sufficiently to clear 9o the front of the box and the two blocks 5 are lowered into their horizontal positions to form extensions of the guideways. The section 7 is then pulled outward, its rollers 9 traveling on the guideways and its rollers l0 contact- 95 ing with the ends of the box, and as these rollers pass onto blocks 5 the angle-irons 14 are brought against the front of the box. Longitudinal displacement of the lower section is prevented by the plates 6. The legs roo 12 being lowered, the section 7 is supported on the same horizontal line with the lid-section, which is now lowered, the mat-tresses of the two sections being uniform, as shown in Fig. 2. Then its use as a bed is no longer required, the lid or upper section is again raised, the legs l2 are folded against the side bar 11, and the section 7 is slid inward. As the angle-irons 14 contact with the rear of the box they are moved forward. The blocks 5 are then turned upward, and the lid or upper section is lowered. The device then presents the appearance of an ordinary boxcouch. lf it is desired to employ the lower spring-carrying section 7 as a cot, it may be entirely withdrawn from the box, and its two sets of legs l2 and 13 will then be brought into use.

The advantages of my invention are apparent to those skilled in the art.

I claim as my invention- 1. The combination with a box-couch having a lid-section, and hinging mechanism for holding said lid-section when raised, of a spring-carrying section approximately a duplication of said lid-section designed to fit within the couch, guideways within the latter for said spring-carrying section, means carried by said spring-carrying section for engaging the front of the couch-body when said section is moved into horizontal line with the lid-section, said means limiting the movement of said section and in conjunction' with the front of the couch-body forming a support therefor at its inner side, and means for supportingl the outer side of said spring-carrying section, as set forth.

2. The combination with a box-couch having a lid-section, and hinging mechanism for holding said lid-section when raised, of a spring-carrying section approximately a duplication of said lid-section and designed to fit within the couch, guideways within the latter oyer which said spring-carrying section is designed to travel, means carried by said spring-carryingsection for engaging the front of the couch-body when said section is moved into horizontal line with the lid-section for limiting the movement of said spring-carrying section and in conjunction with the front of the couch-body forming a support therefor at its inner side, means for preventing longitudinal displacement of said spring-carrying section when extended, and means for supporting the outer side of said spring-carrying section, as set forth.

3. A bed-couch comprising a box or body, a spring-carrying section secured thereto at one side, inclined guideways at the ends of said box, a second spring-carrying section resting on and capable of being moved over Said guideways, means secured to the inner side of said second section for engaging the front of the box when said section is moved outwardly, said means limiting the forward movement of said second section and means secured to the other side of said section for supporting it in its outward position, substantially as set forth.

4. A bed-couch comprising a box or body, aspri iig-carrying section forming thelid thereof and secured thereto at one side, inclined guideways at the ends of said box, a second spring-carrying section resting on and capable of being moved over said guideways, stepplates carried by said second section for limiting the forward movement thereof by eugaging the front of said box and forming supports forthe inner side of said section when the latter is moved intoits outward position, and means secured to the other side of said section for supporting it when in said latter position.

5. The combination with a box or body havingalid, of a spring-carrying'section designed to fit in said box or body beneath said lid, guideways at the ends of said box, rollers carried by said section resting on said guideways, angle-irons secured to one side of said section for engaging the front of the box, and legs secured to the other side of said section, substantially as set forth.

6. The combination with a box or body having a lid, of a spring-carrying section designed to tit in said box beneath said lid, vuideways at the ends of said box, extensions for said guideways at the ends thereof, stops on said extensions, rollers on said section designed to travel on said guideways and extensions, and stops secured to the inner side of said section designed to engage the frontof said box when said section is moved into its outward position, substantially as set forth.

7. The combination with the box or body having a lid, of a spring-carrying section having rollers at the ends of one side, inclined guideways for said rollers within the box, hinged blocks at the ends of said guideways having side plates, angle-irons secured to said side of said section for engaging the front of the box, and legs secured to the other side of said section, substantially as set forth.

8. The combination with the box or body having alid, of a spring-carrying section having rollers at its ends, inclined guideways for said rollers within the box, extensions at the outer ends of said guideways, stops on said extensions for preventing the longitudinal displacement of said section, angle-irons secured to the inner side of said section for engaging the front of the box when such seetion is moved into its outward position, and legs secured to the outer side of said section, substantially as set forth.
