LEONIA MABEE, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
SKlRT-PROTECTO R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 667,543, dated February 5, 1901.
Application filed January 15, 1900. Serial No. 1,497. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEoNIA MABEE, of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Rainy-Day Petticoat and Skirt, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
This invention relates togarment-protectors for protecting womens clothes from rain, mud, &c.; and it consists of the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter shown, described, and claimed.
Figure 1 is a view of a petticoat which constitutes a part of my invention. Fig. 2 shows the arrangement of the different parts when the garment-protector is in use. Fig. 3 is a view showing the su pporting-tapes carried by the inner side of the waterproof skirt.
Referring by numerals to the accompanying drawings, 1 indicates an ordinary petticoat, secured to the inner side of which at a suitable distance from the bottom is a section 2 of waterproof material, which is of a width sufficient to extend to the lower edge of the petticoat, in which position it is secured by means of stitches. 3 indicates a section of similar material secured to the lower edge of the petticoat on the outside, the purpose of these sections being to protect the lower part of the garment 1 from all dust, &c., which might be stirred up in walking. Should either of the sections become worn it may easily be removed and another substituted instead.
As a means for protecting the outer garments from rain, snow, mud, &c., I provide an open waterproof skirt 1 6 ofa length slightly longer than the outer skirts, and secured to the inside thereof at a suitable distance from the bottom is a plurality of tapes 17, carrying on their lower ends the sockets l8. Secured to the waistband 14 of the 'petticoat 1 is a plurality of tapes 13, corresponding in number to the tapes 17 and carrying on their lower ends the balls 15, the purpose of which is to engage with the sockets 18 when it is desired to protect the outer garments.
When it is desired to wear the entire garment-protector, the Waterproof skirt 16 is worn in the usual manner. The tapes 17 are then brought below the outer skirts which it is desired to protect and are joined to the tapes 13 by forcing the balls 15 into the sockets 18. This will serve to hold the skirts up out of the mud and prevent the same from becoming soiled, or otherwise injured, and at the same time the petticoat l is protected by means of the sections 2 3.
I claim- A garment-protector, comprising an outer waterproof skirt having a plurality of tapes on'its inner side, in combination with an undergarment having a section of waterproof material secured to the lower edge thereofon the inner side, a separate section of waterproof material secured to the outer side of said undergarment, a plurality of tapes carried-by the waistband of said underg'arment, and means for connecting the lower ends of said tapes to the tapes carried by the waterproof'skirt, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LEONIA MABEE.
