PANTALOONS-PROTECTOR.

I SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 577,066, dated February 16, 1897.

To all whom it may COYLCGZH:

Be it known that I, LLOYD B. POTTER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Emporia, in the county of Lyon and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pantaloons-Protectors,

of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in those pantaloons-protectors .which are worn over the lower ends of the leg portions of the garment in inclement weather, and my protector is so constructed as to permit the lower ends of the pantaloons-legs to retain their ordinary position and shape unsoiled either on the exterior or interior thereof and at the same time protect the upper portions of the I portions, wherebythe lower edge of the pantaloons-leg is kept out of contact With the ankle portion, as hereinafter described.

My invention consists, secondly, in a pantaloons-protector made up of four, five, or six pieces of material secured together in a peculiar manner, as hereinafter described and claimed.

In order that my invention may be fully understood, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the-accompanying drawings, in

which- Figure I is an inside view of my improved pantaloons-protector, showing it in course of construction, the ankle-pieces being separated from each other and from the inner piece, the middle part of the outside piece be- 1 ing omitted. Fig. II is an outside view of the 4 .as it is arranged for use, looking at the inner side of the left leg and showing a suitable fastoning. Fig. VII is a vertical longitudinal section. Fig. VIII is a vertical transverse section.

The drawings represent a pantaloons-protect thelower limbs during rain, snow, or wind storms and the the upper portion of the shoe in inclement weather. The outside portion 1 is cut from a suitable piece of material, so as to fit over the corresponding portion 2 of the pantaloons, and is strengthened by stays 3 or stiffeners of some nature located in pockets 4, with which the outside portion is provided, so that the outside portion maintains an upright position while being worn. The outside portion is made of any length desired from the foot to the knee, the usual length being from ten to fifteen inches.

5 is the inside or under portion, out as a continuation of the outside portion or a separate piece attached to the outside portion in cone shape or narrow enough at the top or end to correspond with the top of the ankle portion 6. The inside seam 7 of the inside or under portion 5 is detached far enough to provide a side opening 8 from the point where the inside or under portion 5 engages with the ankle portion 6 to permit the wearer to put it over the shoe 9. This side opening is protected by a tongue or flap 10. The small end of the inside or under portion 5 is attached to the top of the ankle portion 6, which allows the protector the same swinging movement as the pantaloons.

The ankle portion 6 is made to fit around the ankle and instep and is strengthened by stays 11 or stiffening of some nature, located in pockets 12, with which the ankle portion is provided, so that the ankle portion maintains an upright position while being worn. The ankle portion has a side opening 13 on its inner side, which is closed and fastened around the ankle by straps let and buckles 15 or by any other adjustable fastening. The

ankle portion 6 provides a support for the outside portion 1 and the inside or under portion 5. The ankle portion 6 may also be cut in two pieces, with the opening in front. In

the latter case the construction would consist of one piece less in the total.

16 is a short strap having a hook 17 or snap or button attached to its outer end and located at'the inside of the top of the outside portion 1, and is provided for the purpose of engaging with an eye 18 on the skirt of a Mackintosh or rubber coat to hold the coat so it will not blow away from the limbs, and thereby afford better protection against rain.

In making my protector I first out two pieces of material of the shape shown in Figs. I and II, which form the outside portion and inside converging portion 5. These pieces are provided with deep transverse creases, forming a horizontal rib 1", on which the inside portion is folded within the outside portion. The top edge and side edges of these pieces are provided with hems 1, so that when the side hems are stitched together two vertical side seams 1 are produced. The pockets 4 are stitched to the outside portion and the stitt'eners 3 placed therein. The ankle portion 6 is formed of three pieces 6, having hems 6 and stitched together, thus produc ing seams 6. The pockets 12 are stitched to the pieces 6 and the stiffeners 11 placed therein. The upper end of the ankle portion is stitched to the outer side of the small end of the inside portion.

I reserve the right to modify in many respects the general construction of the protector so long as it embodies the essential features of my invention.

Having thus described my invention, the following is what'I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. A pantaloonsprotector comprising an outside portion, an ankle portion, and an inside portion located intermediate ot' the outside and ankle portions; substantially as described.

2. A pantaloons-protector comprising an outside portion, an ankle portion, and an inside portion located intermediate of the out side and ankle portions; the ankle portion folding within the inside portion, and the inside portion folding within the outside portion substantially as described.

3. A pantaloons-protector comprising an outside portion, having an inside portion, and a horizontal folding rib between the outside and inside portions, and an ankle portion; substantially as described.

at. A pantaloons-protector comprising an outside portion, an inside portion having a side opening, and an ankle portion having a side opening and suitable fastenings for closing the side openings; substantially as described.

5. A pantaloons-protector comprising an outside portion, an ankle portion having a side opening, and suitable fastening and an inside portion having a side opening, and a ton ue for closing the side openings; substantially as described.

6. A pantaloons-protector comprising an outside portion having vertical stiffeners, an ankle portion having vertical stiffeners, and an inside portion located intermediate of the outside and ankle portions; substantially as described.
