To all wimm it may concern Be it known that I, MARY SLAWINSKA, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Humphrey, in the county of Platte and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Parachute-Garments, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in parachute garments.

The primary object of the invention is to provide a garment adapted to be worn by aeronauts and whereby the progress of the wearer is impeded when falling from great altitudes such as from a balloon or aeroplane.

A further object is to provide a garment for aeronauts having resiliently bound parachute portions such as a skirt and cape and adapted to fill with air upon a descent of the wearer and thereby retard the rapidity of the fall.

A still further object is to provide means worn by the person and adapted to open and fill with air upon a rapid descent of the wearer either in an upright or an inverted position.

With these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims.

In the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views z-Fi gure 1 is a front elevation of the device. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof partially broken away, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the upper portion of the device.

Referring more in detail to the drawings. the invention broadly consists of a garment in the form of overalls having the leg portions 10 and body portion 11, the same being provided with a front and rear half skirt 12 and separated cape side members 13. The skirt 12 being divided in the two halves, the separate portions thereof being positioned at the front and the rear of the garment, their adjacent edges 14 are secured longitudinally to the outer sides of the garment legs 10 as best illustrated in Fig. 2 while a resilient shoe string 15 is provided in the bottom hem 16 of the skirt. tions 13 being positioned over the shoulder portions 17 of the overalls, such portions are severed as at 18 and are adapted to be secured together by means of the buttons 19 and button holes 20. The said cape portions 13 are provided throughout their lower edges with a resilient tape 21 shirred within the marginal hem 22 thereof and are secured to the overall garment by the V-shaped stitch 23 at the front and rear thereof.

Front and rear pockets 24 are secured to the garment by means of the aforesaid stitching 23 and are open at their tops and provided with a reinforcing shirring string 25.

From this detailed description of the device, the operation thereof will be clear, it being understood that the aeronaut puts on the garment and secures the same by means of the buttons and button holes. In the event of an accident in which the aeronaut is precipitated downwardly, the skirt and cape portions will fill with air, thus opening the same until they become fully inflated, the resilient binding allowing the lower edges of the skirt and cape to expand outwardly while being drawn inward and thus rendered less cumbersome when not in active use. In the event that the aeronaut is thrown head first toward the earth, the pocket 24 will act in a similar manner as parachutes and thus retard the downward movement and tend to turn the descending body to a reverse or upright position.

While the forms of the invention herein shown and described are what are believed to be preferable embodiments thereof, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made in the form, proportion and details of construction without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.

What I claim as new is 1. A garment comprising overalls, front and rear skirts attached at their tops and sides to said overalls, opposite side capes secured at their tops and sides to said overalls, resilient members at the lower edges of said capes and skirts and downwardly tapering pockets carried by the upper portion of the overalls at the front and rear thereof and secured thereto at the lines of attachment of the capes to said overalls.

2. A garment for aeronauts comprising a full length overall member having leg and bod ortions, front and rear skirts secured at t ieir adjacent edges to the outer sides of the legs of the overalls, the body portion of the overalls being slitted at the shoulder portions thereof, opposite side capes positioned over the slitted shoulder portions and secured at their tops and their side edges to the body portion of the overalls, resilient binding members at the lower edges of said skirts and capes, downwardly converging pockets attached to the body portion of the overalls at the lines of attachment of the 10 capes thereto and shirring strings in the top edges of sand pockets.
