CORSET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 662,999, dated December 4, 1900.
Application filed May 26, 1900. Serial No.18,l49. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ROBERT LINDSAY YOUNG, engineer, of 58 St. Vincent Crescent, in the city of Glasgow, Scotland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corsets and in Attachments for the Same, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in corsets and in attachments for the same, and has for its object to support and improve the outline of the figure by compressing the abdomen.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a corset, showing my improvements applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the attachment. Fig. 2 is a section taken through the line a b, Fig. 2. Fig. 3 is an end View of the same.
My invention consists of a thin stiff plate A of wood or other suitable material or metal so shaped as to resemble the abdomen. At right angles to this plate A, I securely but loosely fasten, by means of ribbon c or otherwise, a fiat arm B, so shaped as to suit the curvature of the sternum, as seen in Fig. 3. Toward the lower edge of plate A, I loosely attach, also by ribbons d d or other convenient means, two buttons C O, which pass through buttonholes F, provided at the lower front edge of the corset E, thus retaining the attachment, which is worn between the corset and underclothing, in the desired position, the plate A pressing against the abdomen and the vertical arm 13 against the sternum. I also provide suitable openings D, both in the plate and arm, for ventilation purposes. The
corset E is also provided with means for lacing at the side from the waist down, (see Fig. 1,) so as pressure may be brought to bear on the plate A and from that to the abdomen.
The vertical arm B is also capable of being reversed and replaced in a few seconds, thereby always retaining it in its proper shape, as well as preventing the plate A from buckling up. It is simply detached from the plate A by undoing the ribbons c and turned upside down, reversed, and connected as before by means of the eyelets J and ribbons.
I claim--- 1. An attachment for corsets comprising a thin wide abdomen-plate of suitable curvature, a fiat narrow arm of the curvature of the sternum having lacing-eyes formed near each end, means for firmly but detachably securing said arm to the said plate and means for detachably securing the whole to a corset.
2. An attachment for corsets consisting of an abdominal plate of suitable curvature, a flat narrow arm of the curvature of the sternum having lacing-holes near each end, means for firmly, but detachably securing one end of said arm to said plate, means for detachably securing the whole to a corset and elongated openings in the arm and plate for ventilation purposes.
In testimony whereof I aiifix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT LINDSAY YOUNG.
