UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMESYE. DOOLITTLE, OF BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO BIRDSEY AND SOMERS, OF BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT, AND NEW YORK, N. Y.
CORSET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 704,007, dated July 8, 1902.
Application filed March 27, 1902.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known'that I, JAMES E. DooLIrTLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bridgeport, county of Fairfield, State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful` Corset, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the manufacture of corsets, and has for its object tol provide a corset that shall have the general appearance and also the qualities in use of a ribbon corset, so called, and which may be produced at very much less expense than ribbon corsets. l
It is of course well understood that each half of a ribbon corset consists, essentially, of a front stay, a back stay, a side stay, and a series' of strips-five, more or less-of ribbon between the side stay and the front and back stays, the ends of each strip of ribbon being attached, respectively, to the side stay and to either a front or back stay, the half-corset being made up without a body portion and without sections, so called.
My present invention consists in interposing between a side stay and the front and back stays front and back sections provided with a plurality of plaits or folds lying in the general direction of, but not necessarily parallel to, the waist-line.
In the accompanying drawings, forming' partof this speciiication, Figure 1 is an elevation of a half-corset embodying my invention; Fig. 2, an elevation of a front section detached; Fig. 3, an edge view of a front sec- Serial No. 100,314. (No model.)
tion detached, and Fig. 4 is a section on the line et in Fig. 1.
10 denotes one of the front stays, (shown as provided with studs;) 11, a back or lacing stay; 12, a side stay; 13, the front section, and 14 thebaclr section. The novel feature of the sections is that they are provided with a plurality of plaits, folds, or tucks 15, lying in the general direction of the waist-line, but not necessarily parallel thereto. In the drawing I have shown the plaits or folds as convergingV from the front and back stays, respectively, toward the side stay. The ends of the sections are attached, respectively, to the side stay and to the front and back stays by seams 16. The plaits or folds are stitched at the ends only, so as to leave them loose and self-'adapting to the contour of the figure in the same manner as are the-strips of ribbon in a ribbon corset, so called.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim- A corset consisting of front, back and side stays and intermediate the side stay and the front and back stays respectively, front and back sections having a plurality of plaits lying in the general direction of the waist-line and attached at the ends only.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
.I AMES E. DOOLITTLE.
Witnesses:
