1 UN ITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM F. BROOKS, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE BROOKS CORSET CO., OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION.
CORSET.
Patented July 17, 1906.
Application filed November 13 1905. Serial No 287050.
To rail whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. BRooKs, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Corsets; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the numerals of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in
Figure 1 a perspective view of a corset constructed in.accordance with my invention; Fig. '2, a side view of one-half of a corset laid flat; Fig. 3, a sectional view on the line a b of Fig. 2; Fig. 4, a sectional view on the line 0 d of Fig. 2. a
This invention relates to an improvement in corsets, and particularly to such as are partially finished and which are adapted to be fitted to the wearer before all of the seams are closed, and is an improvement on the corset shown and described in Patent No. 794,698, granted to me July 11, 1905.
In order to equalize the strain upon the sections, strips of material were attached to the edges of the sections to which tapes were connected; but in fitting a corset to a person with a full figure it is difficult to draw the overlapping sections to the right curvature.
The object of this invention is to provide a partially-finished corset with steel pockets at the edges of the detached sections, whereby those edges may be conveniently drawn to proper position; and the invention consists in the construction hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claim.
In illustrating my invention I have shown a corset similar to the one shown in my previous patent; but it will be understood that the cut and number of sections of the corset may be varied at will.
As herein shown, the corset comprises a front section 2, a back section 3, and side section 4, and these sections are firmly united at a fixed line and preferably at the waistline. While the forward portion of the buskgore 5 is separated from the edge 6 of the upper front of the corset, the upper portion 7 and lower portion 8 of the rear edges of the front section 2 are detached from the corresponding edges of the side section 4, while the lower portion 9 of the back section 3 is detached from the corresponding edge of the side section 4. In the edges 6, 7, 8, and 9, which overlap the adjacent sections, I form narrow pockets 10, 11, 12, and 13, into which I insert short pieces of steel 14, and by the term steel I wish to be understood as including bone, reeds, and such other stiffening material as is commonly employed for stiffening corsets. The detached edges are provided with tapes 15, so that they may be drawn together in the same manner as in the previous patent.
A corset thus constructed is placed upon the person to whom it is to be fitted and the unfinished sections drawn together to the desired extent. By drawing upon the tapes the strain is taken by the steels, which conform to the figure of the person being fitted, and when so drawn the curvature may be indicated by a light line or other mark upon the garment. The steels are then removed from the pockets and the .garment closed along the lines indicated by the fitter. By employing the steels a more perfect fit is secured than is possible where the edges of the overlapping sections yield at one point more than the otherthat is, without the steels the goods are liable to stretch and so that the strain upon the overlapping sections is unequal.
I claim A corset having its sections united by a fixed line, portions of the sections beyond a fixed line overlapping the adjacent sections but detached therefrom, the edges of said overlapping sections formed with pockets, and steels located in said pockets from which they are adaptedto be removed after fitting, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the ing witnesses.
WM. F. BROOKS.
