ATEENT NETTIE TEMPLE, OF STOCKTON, CALIFORNIA.
CORSET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent- No. 703,852, dated July 1, 1902. Application filed February 18, 1902. Serial No. 94,594. (No model.)
To all whont it may concern:
Be it known that I, NETTIE TEMPLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stockton, in the county of San Joaquin and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Corsets, of which the following is a specification. I
My invention relates to improvements in corsets; and it consists in a certain peculiar construction the novelty, -utility, andadvantages of which will be fully understood from the following description and claim when taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, inwhich- Figure 1 is a rear elevation of a corset embodying my invention as it appears when open and readyto be applied to the body; Fig. 2, an enlarged rear elevation, partly in section, illustrating the lacing-tabs at the waist-line of the corsetin their proper relative positions; and Fig; 3, a transverse section on a slightly-enlarged scale, taken in the plane indicated by the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings, referring to which- A A are the sections of my improved corset,
which may be and preferably are of the ordi-' nary construction except in the particulars hereinafter noted, and B is a strip of elastic webbing permanently connected to the rear edge portions of the sections, preferably at the inner sides thereof, and interposed between said edge portions. The rear edges of the sections A and the strip 13 are by preference so shaped that the back of the corset will have an expansion of about two inches at its upper end, an expansion of about one and one-half inches at its lower end, and an expansion of about one inch at the waist-line. O O are short lacing-tabs disposed at the waist-line of the corset and projecting laterally inward from the rear edges of the sections A. These tabs 0 in the preferred embodiment of the invention are formed integral with the section A and, are provided adjacent to their free vertical edges with eyelets Ct to receive a lace D and between the eyelets and said free edges with whalebones b, the latter to prevent the lace from tearing outof the eyelets when the corset is in use.
E E are lacing-tabs similar in construction to the tabs 0 and located at a point intermediate of said tabs O and the upper end of the corset, and F is the'lace by which the tabs E are connected.
By virtue of the construction of my improved corset as described in the foregoing the wearer is obviously enabled to readily tighten or loosen the corset at the waist without interfering with the adjustment at the upper end or lower end of the'corset. It will also be observed that when the adjacent edges of the waist-line tabs 0 are drawn together to tighten the corset at the waist'the corset will be held so securely that the movements of the body cannot disarrange or cause its upper end and lower end to tighten over those portions of the body which require freedom of motion, This in conjunction with the elastic connection'between the rear edges of the sections A renders the corset very comfortable to the wearer and symmetrical in appearance. Further, it will be observedthat by virtue of the lower rear corners of the sections A being free to move toward and from each other there is nothing to interfere with the adjustment of the waist-line tabs 0 and upper tabs E and nothing to exert uncomfortable pressure against the abdomen or prevent free movementof the hip of the werer.
The short'waist-line tabs 0 and the comparatively long space between the upper ends of the same and the lower ends of the upper tabs E are materially advantageous, since they admit of the corset being laced very tight at the waist without liability of it exerting undue pressure on the lower part of the lungs and causing discomfort and injury to the wearer.
When the tabs 0 are drawn together and connectedbythe lace D, there is no liability of the'corset being expanded at the waist by the more violent movements of the body at that point, and consequently no liability of strain being placed on the waist-seamsof the garment worn overt-he corset and the resulting formation of wrinkles in the garment between theavaist and shoulders thereof.
I have entered into a detaileddescription of the construction and relative arrangement of parts embraced in the present and preferred embodiment of my invention in order to impart a full, clear, and exact understanding of the same. I do notdesire, however, to be understood as confining myself to such specific construction and arrangement of parts, as such changes or modifications may be made in practice as fairly fall within the scope of my claim.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-- The herein-described corset comprising sections A, the lower rear corners of which are arranged a suitable distance apart and are free to move toward and from each other, short lacing-tabs extending laterally from the rear edges of the sections at the Waist-line of my hand in presence of two subscribing wit- 25 nesses.
