JAMES P. MoLEAN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT ,lN CORSETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. [88,023, dated March 6, 1877 a lication filed January 26, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES POTTER MGLEAN,
. of the city, county, and State of New York,
have invented certain novel and' useful Improvements in the Construction of Corsets, (Jorselets, or Bodices; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which is lettered to correspond with and form a part of the specification.
In order that the public may understand the nature of my said invention, and those who are skilled in the mechanic art of corsetmaking be enabled to construct the same, I will describe it as follows, to wit:
A is acorset, provided with zigzag tempered wires 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9, arranged in lieu of the ordinary whalebone, the same being underlaid with cotton wicking or otherwise throughout the entire corset or bodice.
The back L is provided with loops in lieu of eyelets to receive the lacings. These loops are formed of one piece of straight wire running the entire length up and down the back of the corset, so that the same may be stitched into the vertical edges of the sections forming the shoulders and back of the corset A. By this means I produce a substantial arrangement of eyes to receive the lacings shown at L, which firmly secures the corset or bandage in its proper position without the liability of tearing the garment or pulling the eyelets out, as is the ease with the ordinary fastenings of commerce now in use.
My Patent N 0.1441589, dated November 18, 1873, covers the bush or clasps for uniting the fronts of a corset constructed of zigzag wire; hence my present application has nothing to do with uniting the fronts of a corset, but is confined to the sides, bosoms, shoulders, and back of the corset, corselet, or bodice, for the purpose of yielding to the different undulations of the body, and adapting itself to the different forms of the various parts thereof with perfect ease to the wearer, from the fact that this zigzag wire, after yielding to the required pressure, comes back into its place, particularly on the sides of the corset, which is not the case with the whalebone or the common flat steels now in use, as both are apt to become bent or broken, particularly with stout ladies.
Having set forth the individual parts of my invention, I will here state that its novelty consists in the construction of a corset, corselet, or waist without Whalebone or flat steel, but, in lieu thereof, the zigzag wires 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9, in combination with the wire eyes or loops shown at L. Therefore I disclaim Patents 17,356 and 178,718; but,
What I claim as novel and useful is- A new article of manufacture, consisting of a corset provided with zigzag wires 1 23 4 5 6 7 8 9, underlaid with wicking, and inclosed in bone casings or pockets, the whole constructed in the manner substantially as above described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe my name in the presence of two witnesses.
JAMES P. MOLEAN.
