Description

J. BOWERS. Corset.
No. 220,014. Patented Sept. 30,1879.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES BOWERS, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN CORSETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 220,014, dated September 30, 1879; application filed June 13, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES BOWERS, of the city of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corsets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the improvement, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to economize labor and material, and to render the corset easier and more comfortable to the wearer.
The accompanying drawings illustrate the nature of the invention, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view; and Fig. 2 represents the several parts of the same detached from each other, and arranged in the order in which they are sewed together, forming one half of the corset, similar letters of reference indicating corresponding parts in each figure.
The invention consists, mainly, in the peculiar construction of the parts E, F, and G, and the combination and arrangement of the same with the parts A, B, O, and D, which will be readily understood by referring more especially to Fig. 2 of the drawings.
A particular description of each specific part and the method of joining. and stitching the same together are not deemed necessary or essential, as the drawings will be a suificient guide in these respects.
It will be seen, however, that the parts A, B, O, and D, which compose the front, do not dili'er very materially from those in common use; but it will be observed that the edges of E and F, which are joined together, are pretty sharply curved, while their opposite edges are straight, or nearly so, and that the part F has a gore, Gr, inserted therein, which peculiarities make the corset conform more nicely to the contour of the back and hips, and thereby render it very easy and comfortable to the wearer. The braces, &c., are inserted in the usual manner.
Having thus described my invention, what 'I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The herein described corset, each half of which is composed of the parts E, F, and G, (which constitute the back and hips,) formed and joined together as indicated, in combination with the parts A, B, (J, and D, arranged with relation to each otherand united substantially as herein set forth and shown.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I hereunto subscribe my name.
JAMES BOWERS.
