l l l I l l 1 l l l l l l l l l l I I l l l v 1 l l l l L l l l l l l UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.,
STEPHEN LASKEY, OF EAST BOSTON, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND SOLOMON SIBLEY, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHIRT-BCSOMS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 155,244, dated September 22, 1874 application filed May 8, 1874.
To all whom fit may concern:
Be it known that I, STEPHEN LAsKEY, of East Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Shirt-Bosom, of Which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings making part of this specilication, in Which- Figure l is a plan of my improved shirtbosom. Fig. 2 is a section on the line w nc of Fig. l, enlarged.
In the ordinary shirt-bosom found in the market the edges of the plaits are all parallel to each other, and such bosom has usually been attached to the shirt in its rectangular form but when it is desired to set such bosom in a shield or tapering form into a shirt, it becomes necessary to cut off a portion of the under outer plait on each side of the bosom, leaving raw edges, which require to be turned in and sewed together with the edge of the shirt between them.
Furthermore, considerable diiiculty exists in cutting these plaits to a uniform taper and size, and Where the lower portion only of each outer plait is cut oiI', it is liable to pucker at the junction of the raw edges with the uncut edge when the bosom is set in.
To avoid these objections is the purpose of my invention, which consists in a plaited shirt-bosom having the under outer plait of each side folded on a line inclined toward the center from top to bottom, in contradistinction to being folded on a line parallel to the center plait, which construction admits of the shirt-bosom being set in in shield form without cutting the under outer plaits, while the same bosom may be applied in a rectangular form, if desired.
To enable others skilled in the art to underl stand and use my invention, I will proceed to 1n the said drawings, A represents a plaited shirt-bosom, each of the under outer plaits a a of which is folded and stitched on a line, b b, inclined toward the center plait c from top to bottom. The portion c of the bosom outside the line b b is of single thickness, its
edge, h, being parallel to the edge of the center plait.
When a rectangular bosom is required, it is simply necessary to sew each of the edges h to the edges of the opening in the shirt made to receive it, While, it' a shield-shaped bosom is desired, it is only necessary either to turn under or out off the portion c near the inclined line b b, and set the bosom in this form into the shirt, and as the plaits a a are already folded on an inclined line, the necessity of cutting them is avoided, while the inclined edges of the plaits a a serve as guides, by which to cut, or on which to turn the bosom to give it the proper shield shape, and I am thus enabled to furnish a made-up plaited shirt-bosom, which can be readily set into a shirt, either in a rectangular or shield form, without cutting the plaits-a desideratum heretofore unattained.
I do not broadly claim a shirt-bosom having its sides sloped or inclined toward the center; but
What I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent as a new article of manufacture, is
A plaited shirt-bosom having the under outer plait of each side folded on a line inclined in toward the center from top to bottom, substantially as described and shown, and for the purpose set forth.
Witness my hand this 5th day of May, 187 4.
STEPHEN LASKEY.
In presence of N. W. STEARNS, W. J. CAMBRIDGE.
