Description

.|. BUWERSf Corsets.
Patehted May 26,1874.
JAMES BOVERS, OF NEWARK, NEV JERSEY.
IWIPRVEMENT IN CORSETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l, dated May 26, 1574; application filed April 13, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J AMES BowEns, of the city of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corsets; and I do hereby declare the followin g to be a full, clear,.and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
Figure l is a side elevation of a corset oomplete, and Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of a part of the same.
The nature of this invention consists in the employment and use ofthe strips A in joining the backs and fronts of corsets, and also, in a hip-gore corset, the employment ofthe strips A and B in joining said gores to the backs and fronts et' said corsets. The strips A and B are made double and joined in the center, leaving a pocket or pockets for the bones, it' desired, in which case two or more rows of stitching will be required7 leaving the necessary space or spaces therefor. The edges of the strips are left open for the reception of the backs, fronts, and gores of the corsets, which are inserted and stitched therein, as shown. Said strips may be woven or made by hand. The object of this invention is to insure uniexact shape of the corset in the process of n1anuf actu rin g.
In joining the backs, fronts, and gores in the ordinary manner, without the use of these strips, the operators are frequently careless in gaging the depth of the seams, sometimes taking too much of the goods, and at other times too little.
The employment ofi the strips A and B also adds materially to the strength of the corsets and makes a neat tinish.
'\Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent ot' the United States, is-
A corset composed of four parts, two front and two back, joined together at the sides by the strips A, said corset being supplied on each side by an elastic curved gore-piece, C, which are also joined to the front and back by similar strips IS, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 7th day of April, 187i.
