IMPROVEMENT IN COR SETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 177,019, dated May 2, 1876; application filed April 8, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LOUISE SCHMITT, of
New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State ofi'Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corsets, of which the following is a specification:
This invention relates to the production of the breast portions of corsets, which will give the appearance of a natural breast without the use of padding, which is injurious to the wearer, and which are supported so that they shall not touch the person; and consists in forming said breast portions each of three suitably-shaped gores, supported, when coinbined, by braces of steel or whalebone, or other suitable material, arranged as hereinafter set forth.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the corset. Fig. 2 is an 'inside'view of the front half of the corset. Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are detached views of the gores that form the breast.

F G H are braces of steel, whalebone, or other suitable material, which keep the breast as formed in proper position and support the dress. They are inserted in pockets in the gores or covered with tape, the ends being firmly fastened to keep them in place, the brace G being straight, and the ones I H being arranged These breast portions are cool and comfortable, retain-their. shape, and support the dress, so as to prevent its bearing against the person.
The following is what-I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. The combinationof the gores O D E, constructed and arranged as set forth, for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of the gores G D E and braces F G H, arranged to operate as set forth, for the purpose designated.
