Be it known that 1, CLARA E. \Vooo- WORTH, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and a resident of the city of Detroit, in the county of WVayne, in the State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements on Corsets, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements on a close fitting bodice or waist, stiffened by suitable means, usually tightened by lacing, and worn for the purpose of giving shape to the figure of the wearer, and it consists of the improved construction and novel combination of parts, of the in'n'n-ovements on same, as will be hereinafter first fully set forth and described and then pointed out in the claim.

Reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification wherein ;Figure 1 is a view of a corset embodying my invention. In this view the corset is shown as it looks on the figure. Fig. 2 is another view of same showing the flap of the corset raised. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional View of the corset on the line as, 00, of Fig. 1. This view shows a central vertical section of the corset and of the part which supports the abdomen. Fig. 1 is a front view of the corset shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a back View, and Fig. 6 is a side view of the corset. Fig. 7 is an enlarged detail vertical sectional view of one of the side sections of a corset on the line 11 y, of Fig. 6.

In the accompanying drawings ;The numorals 1 and 2 indicate the front sections of the corset 3 and 4 thin flat strips of steel used as a stiffening and attached to the front edges of the adjacent front sections 1 and 2 of the corset, which stilfening strips of steel 3 and l extend from the top of the corset to the lower portion of the abdomen, 5 and 6 the elastic bands of the corset attached to the cloth adjacent the front steels 3 and 4, and to the cloth of the front sections 1 and 2 of the corset at the sides of the abdomen, 7 and 8 the back sections of the corset, 9 a back lace, and 10 and 11 the pliable yielding side sections of the corset.

The front and back sections 1, 2, 7, and 8 of the corset, respectively, are made of cloth of any suitable material, of any suitable size or shape, and suitably still'ened with thin l'lat strips of steel, bone or other suitable material.

To the steels 3 the clasps '12 are secured and to the steels t the headed studs 13 are secured, and the adjacent front edges of the front sections 1. and 2 of the corset are socurely held together by engaging said clasps 12 with said headed studs 13.

14 is a hook and 15 an eye secured to the cloth at the ends of the steels 3 and -1- a t the lower part of the abdomen to securely hold the front sections together at this point.

16 and 17 indicates stiffening at the adj acent edges of the back sections 7 and S of the corset, and in this stilfening 16 and 17 eyelets 18 are formed. Through these eyelets 18 a lace 1) is passed and the ends so cured together, this firmly secures the back sections 7 and 8 together, and gives form to the figure of the wearer.

The side sections 10 and 11 are formed of two thicknesses a, 6, shown in Fig. 7 of elastic, rubber or other suitable pliable yielding material, and secured to the adjacent edges of the back and front sections of the corset as shown in Fig. (3. These elastic side sections 10 and 11 are small at the waist and wider at the top and bottom, and extend from the top to the bottom of the corset, that is past the abdomen to the bottom of the cloth, 0, over the hips and back. To this cloth portion, 0, of the corset one end of the hose supporters 19 are firmly secured, as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 4. The result is that when the sides 10 and 11 of a corset are so made, a person wearing this corset can move or bend in any direction with perfect freedom.

This corset is made with two series of transverse elastic bands 5 and 6 formed of rubber or other yielding pliable material. These series of bands are made of two thicknesses, (Z, 0, shown in Fig. 3 of elastic, rubber or other pliable yielding material, with spaces (3 between each two adjacent transverse double-thickness bands, as shown, and are secured at one edge to the cloth supporting the adjacent steel, and at the other edge to the cloth of the adjacent front section of the corset, as shown in Figs 1, 2 and 4.

The corset proper is open nearly to the top of the abdomen, and these double elastic bands 5 and 6 are longer at the top and shorter at the bottom of the abdomen, in order to draw the corset in, or around it, slightly below the abdomen, as shown in Figs. '1, 2 and t. When so constructed the front sections 1 and 2 of the corset each have a portion or flap 20, shown in Fig. 4, extending over the elastic front bands 5 and 6, and this portion or flap 20 is boned to the eX- treme end of the flap, as shown, this does away with the bulging or wrinkling of the corset at its junction with the part thereof that supports the abdomen.

21 is a hose supporter attached to each of the flaps 20, so that these flaps 20 when properly secured by a hose supporter 21 to the hose (not shown) hold the elasticbands 5 and 6 and the front sections 1 and 2 of the corset in place. In this'case one end of the hose supporters 21 are attached to the flaps 20, while in ordinary use the hose supporters are attached to the lower end of the cloth of the front steels 3 and 4, so that this corset is difl erent in this respect. And again by securing the hose supporters 21 in this case to the flaps 20 of the front sections 1 and 2 of the corset, the support for the abdomen is left free to perform its ordinary functions. So that a device of the class described provides a simple, strong and durable article of manufacture and one efficient in practical use.

Having thus described my invention, I claim g In a corset, two front sections, thin flat steel strips secured to the front edges of the adjacent front sections and extending from the top of the corset to the lower portion of the abdomen, transverse elastic bands arranged in a series at each side of the corset forming side sections extending from the top of the corset to the bottom thereof below the abdomen and lower ends of the strips, said side sections being drawn in at the waist line of the corset and widening at the bottom of the corset below the abdomen, spaced apart transverse elastic bands of double thickness arranged in two series and secured between said steel strips and said front sections at points upon the latter at the sides of the abdomen, said last-named elastic bands being longer near the top of the abdomen than at the lower portion thereof, flaps boned the entire lengths thereof, said flaps extending over the middle of the last-named series of elastic bands and separated there from, and hose-supporting members secured to the bottoms of said flaps.
