SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 662,204, dated November 20, 1900.

Be it known that I, ADELBERT O. SIMKINs, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Cover for a Basket or other Receptacle, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.

My invention relates to a cover which is adapted to be readily applied to or disconnected from a receptacle, such as a basket, whereby the latter can always be fully incased, presenting a clean and neat appearance, so as to set off the articles contained in the basket, and the cover may be utilized for advertising purposes.

To the above ends my invention consists of a cover adapted to fit the exterior of a basket or receptacle and having at its upper end a series of separate or independent tabs which arev adapted to be folded over the top or upper edge of the basket or receptacle and to be held in position thereupon by a ring provided with a plurality of depending flanges.

Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a cover for a basket and other receptacle embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a perspective view of a fastening device whereby the cover may be helpl in position upon the basket or receptacle. Fig. 3 represents a vertical section of the basket seen in Fig. 1.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.

Referring to the drawings, A designates a cover, the same being made of paper or other suitable material and of such contour that it will snugly incase the exterior of a basket or receptacle B of usual construction.

0 designates tabs formed upon the upper edge of the cover A and adapted to be folded over the top portion D of the basket and down into the interior thereof and being held in position by means of the ring E, which consists of the horizontal top E and the inner and outer concentric flanges F and G, depending from said top, whereby when the parts are assembled, as seen in Fig. 3, the inner flange F effectively conceals the depending portion of the tabs 0, while the outer flange G conceals the adjacent exterior portions of the slits between the tabs.

The top E embraces the bend of the cover which rests on the top of the basket, and thus contact of exterior objects with the upper portion of the cover is prevented, .while the top of the cover is effectively clamped to the basket.

It will thus be seen from my invention I have provided a basket or receptacle with a cover and aclamping device therefor whereby the cover can be readily removed when it becomes dirty or damaged and a clean or fresh cover applied in its place, preserving an attractive appearance.

The cover can also be utilized for advertising purposes or to have the name of the goods or merchandise sold placed thereon or such advertisement as may be desired.

In addition to the above advantages the cover will prevent the escape through the cracks of the basket of any small fruits, vegetables, &c., thus occasioning saving to the dealer.

It will be apparent that slight changes may be made by those skilled in the art which will come within the scope of my invention, and I do not therefore desire to be limited in every instance to the exact construction I have herein shown and described.

Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- A cover for a basket or other receptacle consisting of an exterior body of pliable material with inturned separate tabs at the top thereof, in combination with a ring formed of a horizontal top and concentric inner and outer flanges, embracing respectively and clamping said tabs depending on the interior of the basket or receptacle, the top bend of said body and the adjacent outer portion of the body about the outer terminals of the slits of the tabs.
