Be it known that we, IVILLIAM E. Brooks and'BoYD S. EPPEs, citizens of the United States, residing at 27 W. Fountain' St., Battle Creek, county of- Calhoun, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Containers, of which the following is a specilica-tion. j

This invention relates to improvements in containers.

The main objects of this invention are:

First, to provide an improved display box or container which may be employed for shipping and storing. goods and also as a display box or container providing a transparent panel through which the goods are visible.

Second, to provide an improved display box or container having these advantages in which the body of the box may be formed of paper board or the like, the window being transferred from one box or container to another, so that the goods are kept in and sold from original packages, the window being inserted from the outside of the box or container without handling or disturbing its contents, and the packages bein neat and attractive.

We accomplish the objects of our invention by the devices and means described in the. following specification. The invention is clearly dened and pointed out in the claims.

A structure which is a preferred embodiment of our invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which:

Referrmg to the drawing, the box or contalner 1 is shown mainly in conventional form. Its front wall 2 has a portion 3 partially severed along its edges 4 to facilitate lts removal to provide a window opening 7, the line of severing being indicated by dotted lines.4 The removable part 3 has a recess 5 at its upper edge providing when the part 3 is removed a tongue 6 on the upper edge of the opening 7.

The transparent pane or panel 8 may be of glass, celluloid, orother material. We provide a supporting frame 9 therefor, which, in thestructure illustrated, is formed of sheet metal. Parts of the inner edges of the frame are turned rearwardly at 10, thenoutwardly at 11, then rearwardly at 12, then inwardly at 13, providing outwardly facing grooves 14 adapted to'receive-the edges of the opening so that the frame is removably engageable therewith and inwardly facing grooves 15 engaging theedges of the panel 8.

The frame engaging members are disposed so that the tongue 6 projects between the panel and the frame as shown in Figs. IIl and IV. The wall engaging grooves are ofl such depth as to permit a vertical and horizontal telescoping movement of the frame with the edges of the opening permitting its beingpassed through the opening,-see Fig. IV, and when in position shifted to engage all the edges, thus providing a convenient means of introducing and retaining the frame.

-Our improvements' enable the sale of goods direct from the shipping containers or cartons and at the same time eli'ectlvely displays the goods in the original packages. As packages handled in the sale of goods soon become more or less soiled and shelf worn with use, by the aid of our improvements it is practical to provide an attractive display package fromthe original containers in which they are shipped which may be thrown away when thel contents of the container are exhausted. The lmore expensive portions and the portions which would be likely to be injured in shipping may be removed and used on the new package or container.

describe various modifications or adaptations which we contemplate, as we believe the disclosure made will enable those skilled in the art to which our invention relates to embody or adapt the same as may be desired.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is:

1. The combination of a container having a panel opening in a walll thereof with :i centrally disposed projecting tongue on its upper edge, a transparent panel, and a 'supporting frame therefor comprising'a body portion lying fiat against the container Wall around said opening, and having portions of its inner edges turned rearwardly, then outwardly, then rearwardly, then inwardly providing continuous inwardly facing inner grooves engaging the edges of the panel, and continuous outwardly facing outer grooves telescopically engaging all'the edges of said opening, the frame body portion constituting the front wall. of said outer grooves, there being an opening in the inner edge of the upper wall engaging groove through which said tongue rojects in overlapping relation to said pane 2. The combination of a container having a panel opening in a wall thereof, a transarent panel and a su porting frame thereor com rising a 'bo y portion lying flat against t e container wall around said Open` ing, and having portions of its inner edges turned rearwardly, thlen outwardly, then rearwardly, then inwardly providing continuous inwardly facing inner grooves engaging the edges of the panel, and continuous outwardly facing Outer grooves telescopically engaging all the edges of said opening, the frafme body portion constituting the front wall of said outer grooves.

3. The combination of a container comprising a wall having a panel opening there, in, there being a substantial portion of the Wall on all. sides of said o ening, with a projecting tongue at one si e thereof, a transparent panel, and a supporting frame for said panel provided with outwardly facing grooves removabl and telescopically engaging all of the e ges of the panel opening whereby the frame may be shifted laterally to facilitate the introduction and removal of the panel through the opening and the engagement and disengagement of the frame with the edges of the opening and providing 'a closed joint between the frame and the edges of the opening when the panel is in position. l 4
