CONTAINER-RIM PROTECTOR.

This invention relates to container rim protectors as used in connection with food containers, and one object of this invention is to provide means whereby the outer edges of food containers are protected from injury. A i urther object is to improve the appearance of the containers and also provide sanitary protection for the same.

These and other objects are attained by the novel combination, construction and arrangement oi various parts, as described in this specification, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a food container provided with a removable type of sanitary protecting ring made in accordance with the invention, partly broken todisclose its novel features.

Figure 2 is a side elevational view of the same partially in section.

Figure 3 is a similar view showing a modified form of construction.

Food containers, cooking pots, vessels and other similar equipments, as used in restaurants, cafeterias, hotels, etc. are subject to very severe usage, and occasionally parts of such containers break ed, the protecting enamel chip, or other severe damage is done by such usage.

The portion most subject to such treatment is the uppermost lip or rim, as may be observed where such food containers are in service.

A broken or chipped lip or rim of such containers is not only very unsightly, but also exceedingly insanitary, as the broken, rough surface and crevices are favorite sheltering places for all kinds of deposits, dirt, and disease germs.

It is also a fact that such broken rims are never kept clean, and when washed, little or no attention is paid to these broken or chipped portions, consequently they present a perma' nent source of danger to the health of the public.

To overcome such decidedly insanitary conditions, and at the same time add to the attractiveness of the containers, there is provided a specially designed protecting covering for the rim or lip of such containers.

In the drawing the numeral 10 designates generically a conical cooking vessel of ordinary type suited to contain foods which are to be kept warm, these vessels having on their larger upper portions an outstanding annular 1928. Serial No. 297,177.

flange 11, above which is an outturned beaded edge 12.

A hot plate 13 is commonly used to support such vessels, the plate having circular openings to receive their lower tapered portion, the flange 11 resting on the plate at the margin of the openings.

In the simpler form of the device, as shown in Figures 1 and 2, a covering, composed of any suitable material is passed over the beaded edge 01 the container, this covering being composed. of an outer skirt portion, curved inwardly to closely overlie the bead, as at 16, and present an inner ring member 17 disposed within the edge of the vessel.

In the type shown in Figure 3, the skirt portion 18 may be spun to closely fit the neck 1d of the container, present a bead 19 over the flange 11 and another bead 20 to enclose the rim 12, the inner element 21, extending slightly within the vessel.

Although the foregoing describes the invention, it is not desired to be limited to the exact construction shown, it being apparent that there may be considerable variations in utilizing the principles disclosed, without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination with a container having a beaded rim and a flange spaced therebelow, of a metal guard ring tightly engaged over-said beaded rim and extending downwardly to enclose said flange.

2. The combination with a conical container having an outstanding beaded rim and an annular outstanding flange spaced in parallel therebelow, said rim and flange being substantially equal in diameter of a metal guard permanently secured to said rim to envelop the same and a skirt portion of said guard extending overand being secured to said flange.

3. The combination with a conical container having an outstanding beaded rim and an annular outstanding flange spaced in parallel therebelow, the rim and flange being uniform in diameter, of a metal guard permanently secured to said rim to tightly enclose the same, said guard having a cylindrical extension to engage the container flange.
