Description

No. 658,73I. Patented Sept. 25, |800. L. W. BALLARD. GARMENT SUPPORT.
(Application filed July 2 1, 1900.) (No Model.)
Z'f1(1f' La-1,?, WM
ET CO., HOY0-LITH0., WASHINGTO i UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LUTHER W. BALLARD, OF ALLIANCE, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO CHARLES C. BAKER, OF SAME PLACE.
GARM ENT-SU PPO RT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 658,731, dated September 25, 1900.
Application filed July 21, 1900. Serial'No. 24,391. KNO model.)
To ctZZ whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, LUTHER W. BALLARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alliance, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment-Supports; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, in Which-- Figure l is a view showing the supporter applied to use. Fig. 2 is a sectional View of one of the garment-clamps. Fig. 3 is a sectional view showing the supporter properly connected. Fig. 4 is a detached view of the garment-supporter, showing the elastic strap connected thereto.
The present invention has relation to garment-supporters; and it consists in the different parts and combination of parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
Similar numerals of reference indicatecorresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
In the accompanying drawings, l represents the connecting-plate, which is substantially of the form shown, or it may be of any other desired form, inasmuch as the form within itself is immaterial; but it should be provided with arms or extensions, such as 2, which extensions are provided with the clampjaws 3, which clamp-jaws are so formed that they will have a tendency to spring apart eX- cept when they are brought together at their free end by means of the sliding clips 4 or their equivalents, and it will be understood that various kinds and styles of clamp-jaws may be employed without departing from the nature of my invention, inasmuch as the only object to be accomplished is to provide a means for easily attaching and detaching the garment from the clamps.
To the plate 1 is attached the elastic strap 5, which elastic strap is provided at its bottom or lower end with a buttonhole 6, which is for the purpose of receiving a button, such as 7, said button being secured tothe upper portion of the pants and preferably uponthe inside of the inner flap; but as to this it is immaterial, as the object hereinafter described can be carried out Without any particular reference to the exact location of the button, except that said button should be so located that the bottom or lower end of the `elastic strap 5 will be properly connected.
It will be understood that by my peculiar arrangement the present invention is adapted for two purposes: tirst, to hold the shirt in proper position and prevent the saine from wrinkling at the bosom and at the same time supporting the pants in such a manner that they will not sag, thereby presenting a neat appearance to the shirt and pants.
In use it is only necessary to connect the clamps to the shirt at the desired or proper point, after which the elastic strap is properly connected, said parts being located when brought into proper position as illustrated in Fig. 1.
It will be understood that when a portion of the garment or shirt is located between t-he jaws 3 as the sliding clips 4 are brought upward or toward the free end of the jaws they will hold the cloth.
The object and purpose of providing the three clamps are to distribute the downward pull, and thereby prevent the shirt from becoming wrinkled or crimped vertically.
By connecting the elastic strap 5 at or about the center of the bar or plate 1 the downward pull ofthe upwardly-extending arms will be equal and alike, thereby preventing any tendency to pull said plate or bar out of a true horizontal position, or, in other words, to keep the bar or plate in substantial horizontal adjustment.
Havingfullydescribed my invention, what Iclaim as new, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is-
In a garment-supporter the combination of a plate provided with upwardly-extending arms, clamps located upon the upper ends of the arms and adapted to engage a shirt, an elastic strap extended downward from about the middle of the plate and adapted to be connected to the pants at its/bottom or lower end, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
LUTHER W. BALLARD.
