HORACE R. BALL, OF NEW YORK, N. VY.
Letters Patcnt'No. 65,329, dated June 4, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN TRUSSES.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: v
Be it known that I, HORACE R. BALL, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Truss; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in whichi Figure 1 is a top view, the p'adbeing shown in section.
Figure 2 shows a rear view of the pad and adjusting device.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
This invention relates'to new and useful improvements in the mode of attaching the pad of a truss to its hoop, whereby the pad is readily adjusted or set in any position desired, as hereinafter explained.
The pad A is attached to the bar B at one side of the pad, by a pin or pivot, e, iig. l, and a set-screw, C, in the middle of the pad, which connects with the end of the bar' B by a link, D, andby means of this set-screw C the pad A is swung on its hinge or pivot e so as to face laterally, more or less, to either side of the person or body, as found desirable. The bar B has a round wrist which fits into a socket in the piece b, so that the pad A may be turned to face up or'down, more or less, by slackening the set-screw g, and turning the wrist B, g. 2, in the socket-piece I), and then tightening up the set-screw@ to hold the pad in the desired. position. The socket-piece b is pivoted in a bracket, h, by a pivot,f, and this socket-piece b is tilted on the said pivot fhy a set-screw, j, iig. 1, to regulate, the pressure of the pa'd A upon the hernia. The bracket 7L is pivoted to the hoop K by a pivot, I, iig. I, which is perforated with a series of holes, m m, so that the bracket L may be turned on the pivot I to throw the pad A above or below the hoop K, more or'less, and be held in position by a set-screw, t', placed through one of the perforations m in the fan-tail H and screwing into the end of the hoop K. These adjusting devices allow the truss to be used with equal facility as either a right or left.
By these means I am enabled to make the pad face up or down, or to either side, more or less, and also to throw the pad out or in for regulating its pressure upon the body, and also to throw the pad above or below the hoop, and thereby insure a correct and easy adjustment of the padpfor each and every case.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l.. I claim the bar B, pivot e, link D, and set-screw C, for regulating the lateral set or facing oi` the pad A, all arranged and acting as herein shownand described.
2. I claim the har B, soekeb', and set-screw g, in combination with the hoop K and pad A, for regulating the vertical facing or set of the-pad, as and for the purpose set forth. i
3.v I claim a pad, A, having a bur B, socket Z), pivoted to th-e end of the hoop K (by a pivot, L) and set-screw j, for regulating the pressure of the pad upon the body, arranged substantially as herein shown and described.
4. I claim the combination of the pad A, bar B, with a perforated fan-tail, II, pivot I, set-screw t', and hoop K, for throwing the pad below or above the hoop, substantially as herein explained.
The above specification of my invention signed by ine-this 27th day of June, 1866.
H. R. BALL.
