Letters Patent No. 103,047, 4elated Mag)A 17, 1870.
IMP'RovEMn'NT 11s Taussns.
The Schedule referred to 'in these Letters Patent and making part. of theame. v'
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it"known `that I, HENRY Howie, of Council Bluffs, in the county of Pottawatomie andinthel State of Iowa,` have invented 'certain new and useful Improvements iu Trusses; and do hereby declare that the following 'is` a full, clear, and .exact description thereof', reference being hadgto the accompanying drawings and" to the letters of referencemarked thereonI4 making a part `ot' this specification.
The nature ofmy invention relates to theconstruc'- tion and arrangement of a truss' forthe treatment of inguinal lie1nia,either` direct' or oblique, single or double; also femoral hernia, and consists iu a novel adjustment ofa biseeted pad, held in place with elastic belts.
4In order te Yenz'm'ble'` others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now .proceed todescribe its construction andl operation, referring to the annexed y drawings, which represent a perspective viewof my truss.-
A represents tl1e trusswhich is so. shaped as tofit nicely t-he lower portion of thev abdomen, and provided with pads,B, forproduciug direct pressure over' the `pointsat which thehernia protrudes. j It is held in its proper place, andthe degree of pressure-desired secured to the-truss, by meansof' an elastic belt, C, aroun'cl the body, over, or rather a little y below the VVhips, and secured to the truss by means of a round screw-head, a, and buckle D.
" To prevent upward displacement of the truss by'` lthe motonlof the body, a small' elastic strap, E, is i' passed from the belt 0,' and around the.thigl1,aud`at taehed to the truss by means ofascrew-head, b.
` The truss A is cut in two parts, as shown in the drawing-for thepu'rpose of making it adjustable. Near the upper and inner edge of one of'tllesections is a rod, d, which4 passes into a' hole or groove made for that purpose in the other section.
From near the lower and innei edge of one section,
va bar, e, projects, which bai' tsin a recess on the;
other section, said recess being covered by a slotted ,l plate.: i y
The bar e issecured at any point desired by means of a screw, fi, and washer, vhaas shown, so that the the truss can readily be vadj usted to suit the rupture.
' .lbetruss maybe made of wood, rubber, metal, or
lvany other material, singly or in combination, as may be found most desirable.
Having thus fully described my invention, y What claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'- l The arrangementf the bisectedand adjustable pad A, providedwith .rod d, bar e, slotted plate j, screw t', washer h, and elastic belts O E, all substan,-
tially as and for the purposes herein set'forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, have hereunto set my hand this 19th day of February, 1870. 'Witnesses: `HENRY HOWE.
B. W. HleH'r, Y E. R, Downs.
