Description

MCALEMY, OFMEMEHIS, TENNEss/E. f i 1Leersrfmmflvo.39,875,1zaaz11fw11, 1869.
naPRovED TRUss.
i The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part `oil' the same.
Be it known that I, J L.MCALEMY, of Memphis, in the county of Shelby, and State of Tennessee, have Iinvented a new and improved Truss, and I do hereby `declare that the' followingjs a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying Jdrawings, making part of this specification, in
^ whichl Figure 1 is aperspective view, illustrating. the manl ner of applying the improved truss to thebody.`
Figlue 2 isa view ofthe pad and cushion, with the latteruncovered. Y Figure 3 is arsectional view; of the pad and cushion, with cover applied. i Figure 4 is .a perspective view of the cushion and pad covered. j Q
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the cover or cap.
Similar letters of reference indicate, correspondingparts in the several gures.
This invention relates to a new andruseful improvel ment on hernial trusses,.which have non-corrodible elastic cushions applied to pads, for preventing painful or unpleasant pressure upon the parts affected.
The nature of my invention consists inthe employment, in combination witha hemispherical elastic trusscushion, of a movablenon-corrodible cap orlcover,"
which is so `constructed and applied to said cushion, that it can be adjusted and set thereon, so as.'to'pro` duce pressure upon the aiected part in any required f direction, as will be 1hereinafter explained. v `To enable'others slilled in the art to understand my .invention, I will describe its construction andoper'ation.. j p
Inthe accompanyingdrawings-e` `.A represents a belt, which passes around the body,
`\so as to embrace the pelvis. i
B isa strap, which is attachedv by a button, d, to the outer side, andnear the lower end` of j the pad O, and which passes between the legs on one 1side of the scrotum, and is attached 'in 'a suitable manner to the stantially-as described. j
' back 'part of belt VA, on one side of the spinal column,-
in such position as will keep it free from fecal matter. The pad G may be constructed of the form shown inf iig. 2, of leather, or other suitablematerial, and Y upon thatside of this pad which lies next the'body a circular piece of sole-leather is stitched, to which is suitably securedk a hollow or solid hemispherical cush ion, E, made of India rubber. f Y
D is a concavo-convex cap, which may be made of hardened rubber, or other non-corrodible substance,
and which is adapted to lit snugly upon the convex surface of the elastic cushion E, and to be adjusted and set thereon in different positions. `For thisfpurpose the cap D vmustbe segment of a sphere less than a-hemisphere.
In the process of forming cap D, or after it is formed, spurs g are fastened to it, so as to rise from its inner surface near its edge, and`extend inwardly, as shown f in figs. 3 and 5. These spurs are intended to and will serve as a means for keeping the'cap D in place on the rubber cushion E, in whatever position it is adjusted thereon.'` w
From the above description it will be seen' that I' employ,-in conjunction with a convex elastic cushion,
which is secured permanently' to the pad of the truss, a hardened cap or cover, which will not corrode nor absorb. the secretions of the skin, and which can be so j adjusted as to produce direct pressure upon theinguinal canal, or to` press upwardly, downwardly, or in any other direction. Having described my invention, f What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-, l The combination of the cover D, elastic cushion E, Y and pad C, constructed, arranged, and operating sub- J. L; MGALEMY. -v
