Description

uitrit tetra atrnt @Hirn W. J. JOHNSON, OF NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA. Leiters Parent No. 69,676, dated october s, 1867.
A IMPROVED TRUSS-PAD.
@its Stimuli referrer: tu in time @rifers @nient mit making part uf the armi.
TO ALL `WHOM I'l MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, W. J. JOHNSON, of New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans, and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and improved Truss; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
With the truss embraced in the present invention, while the pad is pressed upward by its spring by the elastic band or beit, by which it is attached or secured to the person, it is always kept pressed closely to the person, it being impossible for it to get away from-the upward pressure under any circumstances. In the accompanying plate of drawings my.improved truss is illustrated- Figure 1 being a face view of the same, and
Figure 2 a central section, taken through the truss in the direction of its length.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
A, in the drawings, represents the large pad, such as is in general use, which pad is attached to a. springbelt or band, of any of the ordinary styles and shapes. B, a thumb-shaped pad, of' a smaller size than the pad `A, fitting into the bed C cut in the larger pad A. This pad B is attached at its upper and smaller end or extremity to the pad A by a hinge, D, so as to freely swing or turn upon it, its lower and larger end being elevated by a'spiral spring, F, placed under it so as to stand at or about an angle of forty-five degrees when no pressure is upon it.
By the above-described combination of pads and spring-belt, when the truss is adjusted the spring-belt presses the pad closely to the body, where it maintains or holds it, under all circumstances and all motions of the body, while, bythe spring F, the lower end of the pad .B is thrown up, producing a constant lifting pressure or power directly upon the hernia.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patentn The truss, constructed as described, with the thumb-pad B hinged to the rim of the annular pad A, thc latter pressing against the body in one direction, while the former, by the action of the spring F in the recess C, presses against the hernia with a. lifting action, as herein shown and described.
W. J. JOHNSON. Witnesses:
