S. M. PERKINS, OF MORRISON, ILLINOIS.
Letters Patent No. cacao, dated April 23, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN WHIFPLE-TREE HOOKS.
fiilge sa ami Infant in in than glitters 53mm mm mating put at 1132 same.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, S. M. PERKINS, of Morrison, in the county of IVhitesides, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Whiifle-Trcc Hooks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, made part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view.
Figure 2 is a similar view of detached parts.
The object ot my improvement is to remedy imperfections that have been found 'in practice to exist in my own whiflie-trce hook, patented November 29, 1859. In the case presented in this application this fastening is represented as applied to use as a whiflle-tree hook for securing the coclreye of a trace. I do'hot, however, desire to restrict its use to this particular purpose, for it is apparent that it is equally appli bl to use as a button or buckle for various purposes.
A is the base, attached in the case shown to a shank which is driven into the end of the whifile-tree. The base is flat upon its upper face, and base. notch'cut in its side, as'shown at A2 A1 is a projection having a circular shoulder at the base, and a thread out upon its upper cnd. On the circular shoulder of the proj'ccting stem A is placed a washer, C, of India rubber, leather, or other suitable substance. 13' is the cap through which passes the stern A, and fitted with a smooth face opposed to the corresponding face of the base A, and having a projection, B, fitting into the notch A when the faces are in opposition. 0, indicated by dotted lines in fig. 2, is a chamber formed for receiving the'washer C. The chamber and washer are both round, and so arranged that the washer shall be tightly compressed in the chamber, and by the friction of the elastic washer against the sides of the chamber hold the cap from turning except by the application of a dircct force for the purpose. I) is a nut screwing on to the stem A, and securing the cap B in place. The cap 13 and base A are placed in juxtaposition when the button is to be inserted. The cockeye E is attached by first placing the oval portion of the same over the knob on the end of the hook, and then the pointed end of the hook will pass readily through the corresponding part of the cockeye. The cap being turned at right angles to the base, as shown in fig. 1, it will be impossible for the trace to become unfastened.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The base A, chambered cap B, and washer C, the said several parts being respectively constructed, and the Whole combined and arranged for use substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereofI have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
S. M. PERKINS.
