Description
UNrrnn STATES' NATENT OFFICEo DRESS-GLOVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of lLetters Patent No. 653,163, dated July 3, 1900. Application filed November 13, 1899. Serial No.v736,837. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom/ it may concern,.-V
Be it known that I, MARTHA ANDERSON, a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at Victor,
' in the county of El Paso and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Riding-Gloves, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to gloves; and it consists in the novel construction hereinafter fully described, and defined in theappended claims, in connection with the accompanying drawings, which forni a.l part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a `plan view of the blank and the three additional Jringer-sections which constitute the glove, and Fig. 2 is a perspective View of a complete glove constructed in accordance with my invention.
Referring now to the drawings by reference-numerals, 5 indicates one of the main sections of the principal blank 5f, cut away at 6 and provided with a projecting portion 7, the purpose of which will be hereinafter apparent. Projecting from the upper edge of the blank 5 are three projecting portions 8, designed to constitute the backs of three fingers, while the portion 9 to constitute the index-linger depends from the blank at the j uncture of the section 5 with the section 10 and is slit in one edge, as at 11, so that when the blank is folded to form the glove thev two edges thereof can be brought together to form the finger. l
The section l0, which forms the palm of the glove, is substantially rectangular, except for the projecting flap 12, which passes around the back of the hand and engages the buttons 13, arranged along the edge of the cut-away portion 6, through the medium of the buttonholes 14.
Centrally of the blank I cutaway or stamp therefrom an Q-shaped portion 15 for the inf sertion of the thumb, said O-shaped portion being open at the top'and communicating with the seam-cut-out portion 16. I particularly desire to call attentionl to the fact that this seam appears below the glove-thumb, and by this provision the marketable article will t the wrist of the wearer snugly, as the iiap l2 Acan be arranged to make a tight fit by arranging the fasteners on the cuff of the glove. This is very desirable, as it obviates the unsightly appearance of a'tight-tting palm and a loose cuff.
The three sections 1'7 represent the front of the three lingers other than the index-finger and are sewed to the bottom of the blank-section 10, fitting in the curved portions 18. j It is necessary to cut these sections 17 independently of the blank proper or a good fit could not be made.
When the glove is about to be finished, the projecting portion 7 is slipped under the edge of the blank-section 10 and secured thereto, whereby the seam made by joining the edges of the sections 5 and 10 will be prevented from ripping.
From the foregoing it will readily be seen that I have provided a blank whereby a glove may be practically made from a single piece of material and which will fit the wrist snugly.
It is of course obvious that the glove may be ornamented in any desirable manner without departing from the spirit of my invention or changing the construction thereof.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a glove, a blank therefor comprising two united sections struck or cut from a single piece of material, finger portions extending from one of said sections, the other section being substantially rectangular and provided with a flap adapted to engage the firstnamed section and a slit finger portion extending from the central upper edge of the blank, substantially as described.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a glove comprising the sections 5 and 10, provided with the cut-out portions 15 and 16, the finger portions 8 and 9, and front finger-sections adapted to be secured to the section 10'and portions S, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MARTHA, ANDERSON'.
Witnesses:
