Description

C. A. BABCOCK. Match Safe.
No. 65,041. Patented May 28, 1867.
@with 1am @anni @with CHARLES A. BABGOGK, OF FRANKFORT, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO HIM- SELF, D. M. GOLDEN, AND D. M. KENYON, OF SAME PLACE.
Letters Patent No. 65,041, dated May 28, 1867.
untreu-sire.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAYV OONCERN:
v Be it known that I, CHARLES A. BABcoeK, of. .Frankfort,in the county Herkimer, and State of New York, have invented, made, and applied to use a certain new and useful improvement in Match-Safes; and I do vhereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ot' the said invention, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making part of this specification, wherein- Figure 1 is a longitudinal and vertical section of said match-safe.
Figure 2 is a plan of the match-safe with th-e cover removed, and only one match in its groove ready to be drawn out and ignited; and I Figure 3 represents the match-safe with a match ignited and held by said safe ready to he taken by the lingers or used in lighting a lamp or candle.
Similar marks of reference denote the same parts.
The object of my invention is to draw one match at a time out from a receptacle, ignite the match as it comes out, and turn it up and there hold it until takenaway by the lingers or burntup. This gives great facility` in places where lamps or candles are used, as the match is held in place and gives light so that a person can see to get the lamp or candle, and has both hands at liberty in taking oif a lamp-shade or otherwise obtaining access to the wick.
My invention consists in a match-'delivering slide or drawer, in combination with a spring igniter, and a spring finger for elevating the lighted end of the match. I also provide a receptacle on the cover ot' the matchsafe, so that the burnt ends can be placed therein and removed from time to time without disturbing the matchsafe itself.
In the drawing, a is the receptacle for the matches, of any desired size and shape. The length thereof, how.I
ever, must correspond to the length of the match used with it. vThis -receptacle is formed with a base, of metal or` other material for supporting the match-safe, and I prefer that the saidV safe be attached toa doorpost or other upright by screws passing through the flanges 'c e, so as .to hold said match-safe -iirmly and in a vertical position. The base b is made hollow to receive the match-delivering drawer cZ that is tted to slide freely therein, and is drawn back by a contractile spring, e, andfis a pull or ring at the front of said drawer, and 2 is a stop to regulate the extent of motion allowed to said drawer d. Across the drawer cZ is a groove, 3, just suiiicient to contain one match, and at the side of said drawer is a groove, 5, to allow the ends of the spring igniter h to project suiliciently within the hase b to come into contact with the end of the match as it is drawn out by the drawer cZ while in the groove 3, and by scratching the phosphorus ignite the match. This spring igniter is attached at oneend, and adjusted in its pressure, by the screw 4. On the other side of the drawer d is a groove, 6, and z' is a spring linger formed at the end with an `incline and a notch, as seen in Figure. This spring finger is attached on the base b, and as the match is drawn along the springr is liftedhy the bottom end of the match, and as soon as the groove 3 clears the front edge of the base Z1, the spring finger t' presses that end of the match down into a notch in the drawer d, elevating the ignited end and holding it with the drawer d extended, as in `g. 3. The matches are taken one at a time from the safe a by the slide or drawer d, as pulled out, and are ignited as aforesaid. k is the cover to the safe a, formed with a receptacle, Z, for the burnt ends of the matches. This can be removed and cleaned out without disturbing the match-safe.
WhatI claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent; is-
'Ille matchldelivering drawer CZ, in combination with the spring igniter z, and ingert'for elevating the lighted end of the match, substantially as set forth.
I also claim forming a receptacle, Z, for the burnt matches upon the removable cover k to the hopper a, so that said burnt pieces may be removed with-facility from the match-safe, as set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my signature this 20th day of February, 1867.
CHARLES A. BABOOCK.
