JAMES H. HOEFLER, 0F LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
LIGHTING DEVICE FOR CIGARS, GIGARETTES, &c.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 26, 1916.
Application filed. May 9, 1916. Serial No. 96,426.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES H. HOEFLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lighting Devices for Cigars, Cigarettes, &c., of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in lighting devices for cigars, cigarettes and the like and has particular application to a device of the class described which may be carried about in the pocket.
In carrying out the present invention, it is my purpose to provide a device of the class described which will embody in its construction, among other features, a casing adapted to contain a plurality of matches and carrying a torch normally arranged within the casing, and means for projecting the torch from the casing and ejecting the matches from the casing singly, in combination with means for igniting the matches and projecting the lighted ends thereof in proximity to the torch so that the latter may be ignited to facilitate the lighting of the cigar or cigarette.
It is also my purpose to provide a device of the type set forth which will embrace the desired features of simplicity, efficiency and durability, which will embody comparatively few parts and these so arranged and correlated as to reduce the possibility of derangement to a minimum, and which may be readily carried about the person and used as a household article.
IVith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts here inafter set forth in and falling within the scope of the claims.
In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 is a plan view of a device constructed in accordance with my present invention. Fig. 2 is an edge elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the other edge. Fig 4 is a top edge view thereof Fig. 5 is a cross sectional view through the device. Fig.6 is a similar view taken at right angles to Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a longitudinal sectional view through the device. Fig. 8 is a longitudinal sectional view through the device taken in a plane parallel with Fig. 7. Fig. 9 is a perspective View showing a detail of the device.
Referring now to the drawings in detail,
acting to close the adjacent edge of the compartment 3 when the section 5 is in closed position. In the present instance, the flange 6 is equipped with a spring finger 7 that frictionally engages the adjacent edge wall of the compartment 4 when the section 5 is closed to hold such section in closed position. Formed in the edge wall of the compartment 4 contiguous to the flange 6 is an elongated slot 8 and pivoted upon a pin 9 extending across the compartment 4 adjacent to the slot 8 is a lever 10 having one end projecting through the slot 8 and equipped with a finger piece 11 and the other end projecting toward the opposite edge wall of the compartment 4. Formed in the edge wall of the compartment 4 at right angles to the edge wall formed with the slot 8 is a slot 12 and mounted in the compartment 4 is a burner 13 in the form of reservoir 14 equipped with an arm 15 projecting toward the lever 10 and pivotally connected thereto as at 16 and formed with a filling opening 17 and a wick tube 18 adapted to contain a wick. This reservoir may be filled with any suitable liquid such, for instance, as alcohol and when the wick in the wick tube 18 is saturated with such liquid the wick may be ignited. The compartment 3 is adapted to contain a quantity of matches and the width 1 of the compartment is such that the matches lie side by side from one edge wall of the compartment to the other edge wall. The matches may be placed in the compartment 3 by opening the section 5 and are held against one another by a follower 19 arranged in the compartment 3 and held against the matches by a spring 20. The edge wall of the compartment 3 remote from the flange 6 is formed with an opening 21 at the juncture of such edge wall with the edge wall of the compartment 3 contiguous to the slot 12 and formed on the last-mentioned edge wall of the compartment 3 and projecting upwardly therefrom is a guide tube 22 having the upper edge inclined upwardly toward the flange 6 and pivoted upon the edge wall of the compartment 3 adjacent to the opening 21 is a strip 23 adapted to close such opening and having the upper end bent at an angle as at 24 to overlie the inclined end of the tube 22. The bent end 24 of the strip 23 is serrated as at 25 and formed on the strip below the bent end thereof is an outwardly projecting finger piece 26 and an inwardly projecting deflector lug 27.
The inner end of the lever 10 is equipped with a laterally projecting pin 28 that eX- tends across the compartment 3 immediately below the innermost match in such compartment.
In practice, the casing 1 is held in one hand and the outer end of the lever 10 swung downwardly by the thumb in such hand and in this movement of the lever the burner 13 is projected through the slot 12 and the pin 28 engages the adjacent match and forces the latter upwardly through the guide tube 22 and as the head of the match rubs over the serrated portion 25 of the bent end 24: of the strip 23 the match is ignited and owing to the bent end 24 of the strip and the shape of the upper end of the guide tube 22 the lighted end of the match is projected in proximity to the wick tube so that the flame from the match may ignite the wick tube. By releasing the lever 10, the burner is returned to the casing through the slot 12 and the strip 23 may be swung to release the match, thereby permitting the latter to fall out of the guide tube so that the device may be again operated.
IVhile I have herein shown and described the preferred form of my invention by way of illustration, I wish it to be understood that I do not limit or confine myself to the precise details of construction herein described and delineated, as modification and variation may be made within the scope of the claims and without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim:
1. In a device of the class described, a casing divided into compartments arranged side by side, a burner in one of said compartments, a lever pivoted in the burner compartment and connected to the burner to project the latter out of the compartment, means for ejecting a match from the match compartment, and means for ignit- Copies of this patent may be obtained for ing the match and arranging the lighted end thereof in proximity to the burner tube.
2. In a device of the class described, a casing divided into compartments arranged side by side, a burner in one of said compartments, a lever pivoted in the burner compartment and connected to the burner to project the latter out of the compartment, means carried by said lever and projecting into said match compartment for ejecting a match from the match compartment simultaneously with the outward movement of the burner, and means for igniting the match and arranging the lighted end thereof in juxtaposition to the wick of the burner.
3. In a device of the class described, a casing divided into compartments arranged side by side, a burner in one of said compartments, a lever pivoted in the burner compartment and connected to the burner to project the latter out of the compartment, means carried by said lever and projecting into said match compartment for ejecting a match from the match compartment simultaneously with the outward movement of the burner, means for igniting the match and arranging the lighted end thereof in juxtaposition to the wick of the burner, and a spring actuated follower in said match compartment acting to hold the matches in proper relative positions.
4. In a device of the class described, a casing divided into compartments arranged side by side, a burner in one of said compartments, a lever pivoted in the burner compartment and connected to the burner to project the latter out of the compartment, means carried by said lever and projecting into said match compartment for ejecting a match from the match compartment simultaneously with the outward movement of the burner, means for igniting the match and arranging the lighted end thereof in juxtaposition to the wick of the burner, and j a spring actuated follower in said match compartment acting to hold the matches in proper relative positions, said match compartment including a hinged section whereby the compartment may be replenished.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
