TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it ltnown that we, J. KIRCIIFELD and F.'HEYL, of Riegelsville, in the county of Bucks, and State ot- Pennsylvania, have invented a new and improved Match-Box; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact' description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to malle and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This inventionrel'at'es to a new and improved match-box, for the use of tobacco-smokers, and designed to be carried in the pocket, for the purpose of' holding friction-matches and a'fuse. The box is also supplied with a. cutter for clipping the ends of cigars preparatory to lighting them.
The invention consists in a novel construction of the box, the peculiar application of certain parts to it, the., as hereinafter fully shown and described, whereby a. very convenient article for the purpose specified is obtained.
The accompanying drawing represents `our invention with the lid raised, or in an openstate, so as to exhibit the interior.
The box may be constructed of sheet metal-t-hat, at least, would be the preferable material-of rectangular form', and provided with a hinged lid, A, the body of the box being designated -by B. lThe body of the boxds divided into three compartments, a l c, by partitions d, one of the compartments, a, containing matches, another, b, a fuse C, and the other, c, being designed to receive and contain the clippings from the ends of the cigars. The compartment c is provided with a separatelid, D, having a eam-shaped cutter, e, attached to its outer edge, which, when said lid is closed, passes into the compartment c, close to its outer end, and passes over a circular aperture made` in said end, and ot" sufficient size to receive the end of a cigar. By raising the lid D, and inserting the end ofthe cigar in this opening, and then closing or shutting down the lid, the cutter c will clip oli` the end of the cigar, the compartment e holding lor retaining the clippings, so that they may-beprcserved for smoking in a. pipe. The compartment b, which contains lthe fuse C, is narrow, but extends thel whole length of the box, and in said compartment there is placed a wheel, DX, having a. serrated or milled edge, by which the fuse may be shoved through an opening in the end of the body B. This wheel projects through an opening, f, in the lid A, for the convenience of moving the fuse when the lid is closed. rlhe wheel D bears suilivciently hard upon thefusc to insure, when turned, the movement of the fuse through the opening in the end of the box. This opening, when the box is not in use, is covered by a slide, g. On one side of the box there is secured a le, or a corrugated surf-.icc is made, over which the matches 'are rubbed, in order to ignite them.
I In using the device, the end of the cigar, which the smoker places in 4his mouth, is clipped as previously explained. A match is then taken from the compartment a, the lid A closed, the slide g drawn back, and the fuse C moved out so as to project a trifle beyond th'e end of the box. The mat-ch is then lighted, and the fuse C ignited, which may bc donc without diiliculty in the wind, as the igniting of C is -simultaneous. 'lhe cigar being lighted, the Vfuse C is moved back within compartment b, and the slide g movedjo cover the opening in the end' of the box through which the fuse passed. The lighted end of the fuse being thus deprived of air, is soon extinguished, and in order to insure this result, and also' prevent the possibility of the casual ignition of the matches in a, thc portion ofthe compartment over the lighted end is covered by a plate, t.
This device may be constructed 'at a moderate cost, and of quite small dimensions, so that it may be carried in the pocket without any inconvenience We claim as new. and desire to secure hy Letters Pntentl. The wheel DX, itted in lthe box B, in connection with the opening in the end of the b ox,and the slide g, all arranged substantially as and For the purpose speoitied.
2. The cutter attached to the lid D, in connection with the opening in the end of the compartment c, substai'itially as and for the purpose set forth. v
3. The Combination vof the box B, hinged lids A D, wheel DX, slide g, and cutter c, all arranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
