SETEI E. WINSLOW, OF KENSINGTON, PENNSYLVANIA.
LAMP-TOP.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 5,880, dated October 24, 1848.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SETH E. WINsLow, of Kensington, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Lamp-Top which will Prevent Explosion and Accidents in the Filling of Burning Fluid-Lamps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof.
The nature of my invention consists in providing a lamp top with two wick holders: one holding a wick which extends down to the fluid contained in the lamp resting upon or within a ledge contained in the lower half of the lamp top or resting on the lamp Within the said half: And the other wickholder made in the usual form but so enlarged as to hold a quantity of wick, which in being screwed down brings this wick in contact with the Wick of the lower wick holder, making one continuous wick. The said upper wick holder can be removed when it is lighted, and be used as safely, as any other lamp, to give light during the refilling of the lamp.
To enable others skilled in the art, to make and use my invention: I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
I construct my safety-fluid lamp top as any other lamp top is made: and in order to prevent explosions and accidents in refilling the lamp; I make an additional wick holder,
below the common wick holder, as shown at A in the accompanying drawing, and I make the ledge to support the lower-wick holder in its place in the lower half of the lamp top and attachedto it, marked B, or it maybe made separate from it, resting within the said lower half of the top, or upon the upper partof the lamp. Then when the upper wick holder, which I enlarge, (marked S) 1n order to have it contain a quantity of wick, is screwed on, the wick of the upper holder comes in contact with the wick of the lower wick holder, and thereby makes one .continuous wick. When the lamp is to be plosion.
SETH E. WINSLOW.
