IMPROVEMENT IN ILLUMINATING INCENSE-BURNERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,126, dated August 15, 1871.
To all whom it may concern: l
Be it known that I, E. VARREN HASTINGS, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Illuminators and Incense-Burners, of which the following is a specification:
The nature of my invention relates to a combined illuminator and incense-burner, constructed in such a mann er thatI the powder that is used as an illuminating compound can instantaneously be ignited by moving a portable lamp inside the urn, as will now herein be fully shown and described. Y

Fig. 5 is a central cross-section, on which the portable lamp-holder is represented to correspond with the position as shown in the line X Y, shown on Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is also a portable lamp to be used inside the urn for incenseburning'.
This, my invention, is an improvement on the illuminator and incense-burner led by me in the Patent Office on the 31st day of October, 1870, and diiiers essentially from my former invention in the employment of an inclined rail, over which the lamp is made to slide upward. This sliding lamp is placed in the upper part oi' the urn, instead of in the base, as formerly made, whereby I am enabled to use a very short straight fuse instead ofthe former one, that was bent downward through guides so as to reach the iiame from the lamp.
a is the urn, secured in some suitable way to the standard b, connected to the base c, as shown. The urn a is covered with two different covers, d and e. The cover d has in the middle a cup, j', intended to contain the illumina-ting compound or incense-powder that is used. A little to the right ofthe cup j' is a hole, g, made through the cover d, over which is laid a fuse, h, reaching to about the middle ofthe cup j'. The illuminating compound is then placed over the fuse 7L in the cup j', and the fuse can then easily be ignited by moving the lamp z' directly under the hole g.
The lamp t' is moved in the following manner: The cup k with the arm l is made to swing around the fulcrum y. On the outside of the cup k is a small ear, m, to which is attached a pin, m', projecting through a curved slot, fn, in
the urn a, as shown. The cup 7c is guided and slides over an inclined rail, o, rising upward from the left to the right, so that the flame from the lamp z' shall reach the hole g in the cover d when the movable arm lis placed in the position as indicated by the dotted line Y Z on Fig. 4. The cup k, arm Z, and lamp t' are together operated from without simply by touching the pin m and moving said pin, as may be desired. Over the lamp i, when placed in the position as shown in Figs. 2 and 4, I secure a shield-plate, p, whereby I protect the cover d from burning, and also prevent the heat of the lamp t' from being conducted directly to the powder-cup fin the cover d.
Vhen the apparatus is to be used for illuminating purposes I lift oft' the cover e and remove it entirely. I then place a fuse, h, so that it will cover the hole g on the cover d and project to about the center of the cup f, as shown in Fig. 3. The illuminating compound is then placed over the fuse hin the cup f. Vhen l wish to ignite the powder I simply move the lamp t by mea-ns of the pin m upward on the inclined rail o, so that thelame, coming directly under the hole g, ignites the fuse, which imparts its heat to the powder contained in the cup j'.
When it is desired to use my vapparatus for incense-burning I use a second lamp, g', Fig. 6, and place it in the bottom ofthe urn a, directly under the cup j'. The incense is then placed in the cup j', the cover .e being placed over it, the fumes from the incense will issue through the perforations r r r r in the cover e.
Having thus fully described the nature, construction, and operation of my invention, I wish to secure by Letters Patent, and claim- Il. A combined illuminator and incense-blu'ner, as constructed with the lamp t', movable around the fulcrum y and over the inclined rail o in side the urn. a, said lamp operated by the projecting pin m moving through the curved slot a in a manner as set forth.
2. In combination with an illuminator and incenseburner, the protecting-shield p, cover d with its cup j', hole g, and fuse h, in a manner and for the purpose as herein fully shown and described.
