IMPROVEMENT .IN LANTERNS.
-r-v-w-QoQ--w-y-w TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, CHARLES F. SPENER, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe, and State of New York, have invented n. certain new and useful Improvement in Lanterns; and I do hereby declare that the vfollowing is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making part of this specification. v y
The drawing represents a central-vertical sectionof my improved lantern.
` My improvement belongs to that class where the globe is rendered removable from the lantern at any time desired; and the invention consists essentially in making the guards open at the top, and the base of thelantern closed at the bottom, so that both the lamp and the globe can be inserted at the upper v end, the lantern body forming a closed receptacleffor the same. i:
As represented in the drawing, A is the base of the lantern, which, instead of being `open at the bottom for the insertion of the lamp,D, from beneath, is closed, as shown, except at the top. 'Ihe guards, B, are secured fast to the-top of thc'base, as usual, but they diifer from the ordinary guards by being made open at the top, so that the globe @,with the tin top E fastened thereto, and also the lamp D, may be inserted or wit-hdrawn at pleasure. The usual handle or bail, mis connected tothe top of the guards. A ring, b, is also 'attached to the tin top E, so that linger may be inserted therein to raise the globe. 'Thislantern differs essen* tially from others in having the top of thel guards open and the base closed, so' that both the lamp and the globe may be set therein through the top. This constitutes a very convenient and safe device, since, under ordinary circumstances, neither part can become detached by accident. The lamp, especially, is much safer in position than when .it is inserted through an open-bottomed base and held by a spring or springs, as in the ordinary device. In the closed chamber A it can never become detached by accident. Another feature of novelty in p my invention consists in setting the globe, with the tin top attached, loosely in the guards, so that it will drop into place of its own weight, and may be raised by simply applying the finger thereto. Thus, not only may the globe be replaced if broken, but it can be raised to light the lamp by simply placing the linger in the loop Z1, while the hand holdsthe baila, the other hand being free to apply the match. In thus rest-ing free and independent in the body of the lantern, so as to be easily operated, it differs from any other device with whichI am acquainted. The thumb-wheel, c, that operates to raise the wick, I make of larger diameter than usual, so that it will reach at Suche distance above the t'op of the base of the lantern, that when the globeis raised, as before mentioned, the `finger can be placed in on the wheel, at a level to'turn it, which is accomplished without taking hold ofthe wheel in the usual way, but simply by the contact of the linger. This is of much importance, for -the'ngers cannot be easily inserted.do\'vntl1 e narrow space between the lamp and base to operateA the wheel of ordinary size. l
I do not claim broadly applying the globe to the lantern so that it is removable, as I am aware that the same is not newybut whatlelaim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. Resting the globe G, with the top E attached thereto, loosely in the open-topped guards B, so as to be raised and dropped atA pleasure, as herein set forth. l 2. Constructing a lantern with closed base and open-topped guards, for the insertion of both the lamp and globe through the top, as herein speeiled.
3.'The enlargedwheel, so situated and arranged as to reach above the topot` the base, to be easily operated by the finger, as herein set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence ot' two subscribing witnesses.
