Description
N. THOMPSUN.
Lantern.
No. 89,520. Patnted Apr 27, 1869.
,Sintra Mesaaww NATHAN THOMPSON, or BROOKLYN, E. D., NEW YORK.
Letters Patent No. 89,520, dated pr'il 27, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN LANTERNS.
To 'all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NATHAN THOMPSON, of Brooklyn, E. D., in the county ot' Kings, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lanterns, ot' which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to theaccompan ying drawing, forming partoif this specification, and in which- Figure 1 represents a side view ot' a lantern with my improvement applied to it; and
Figure 2, a similar view, taken at right angles to iig. l, of the base and guardv-portion'of the lantern.
with the cap and glass removed.
Similar 'letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in bothigures.
rlhis improvememeut relates to a swinging attachment ofa bail, orloop, arrangedto pass over the top ofthe lantern, and provided with a set-screw, or other suitable locking-device, to retain it in place for the purpose of facilitating the removal and replacement of the' glass with every security for its retention when in its place, on' the base portion of the lantern, as represented and described in an application made by me, for which Letters Patent have been allowed.
1n the present improvement, as iu the previous one, inst referred to, thehandle is pivoted to said glassretaining bail, or loop, so that in passing or swinging the bail to or from its place over the top of the ylantern, the handle is carried with it, and thereby suitably located forcarrying-purposes, and so that it-is out of the way,'when necessary to remove o1' replace the glass; but instead of pivoting such securing-bail to the base, or lamp-portion of the lantern below, andmaking the guard, 'or cage, with its cap attached thereto, removable, I provide the upper ring of the guard with lugs, to form pivots for the swinging bail, which may thus be made much shorter than in any previous arrangement, and the guard be retained as a permanent fixture, to the better protection of the glass, and the cap only made removable, for the purpose ot'taking out or putting in said glass.
Referring to the accompanying drawing- A represents the base, or lamp-holding portion of the lantern; and
`B, the guard, or cage, which may be permanently secured thereto, and which carries, at its top, a ring,
C, on opposite sides of which are lugs, a a, arranged to form pivots, b b.
D is the lantern-cap, which is made to t loose over the ring C, so as to be capable of being lifted'on and Off` the same, said cap, when on or down, resting on the flange-portion of such ring.l
E is the swinging, or' securing-bail, which is freely attached tothe pivots-b b, of the ring C, and of suitable length to swing over the top of the cap, said bail being provided, at its top, with a set-screw, c, which serves to lock, or hold the cap down on the ring, and thus make certain, or positive. the retention of the Hinged, or pivoted to said bail is the handle, G, of thelantern.
When necessary to take out the glass n', -1t is only necessary to slacken the screw c, and swing, or throw over the bail. E, as represented iu iig. 2, when the cap D may be removed, and the glass F lifted out through the ring O. e
After the glass is replaced again in like manner,`
that is, by entering'it from above throngh'fthe ring O,the cap D is put on,.the bail E returned to its vertical position, and the screw c adjusted, to hold down the capz' By this arrangement, the guard B may remain a xture, and thusy the glass is secured, even .if it b'e neglected to replace the cap D, while the shortness of the bail E, as compared with a pivoted attachment of it tothe base-portion of the lamp, not only economizes construction, but is, in some respects, more handy and convenient.
I do not claim a lautern-cap, hinged to the top of I the guard, with the bail pivoted thereto, as that has been done before; but
Whatis here claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, isi- The securing-bail, or loop E, pivoted, as at b b, to au uppe`r ring, C, of the guard B, and provided with a set-screw, c, or other suitable locking-device, incomhination with the lantern-cap D, made removable from said guard, substantially as specified.
NATHAN THOMPSON.
