J. H. IRWIN.
Lantrn. l No. 57,914. I Patented Sept-.11, 1866.
PATENT @FFIGE JOHN H. IRWIN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.'
' IMPROVEMENT IN LANTERNS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 57,914, dated September 11, 1866.
To all whom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. IRWIN, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Imclare and make known that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being' had to the accompanying drawings and the letters and figures marked thereon, which form partof this specification. p
My invention consists in attaching the guard of alantern, or that part inclosing the glanss globe or protector thereof, to the bottom ot' the lantern, or that part containing the lamp, by a hinge upon one side and a suitable springcatch, or its equivalent, upon the other side, so that the aforesaid glass globe may be removed and replaced, when desired, in a simple, cheap, and convenient manner, as hereinafter more fully set forth.
To enable those skilled in the art to understand how to construct and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe the same with particularity, making reference in so doing to the aforesaid drawings, in which Figure l represents a side elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section thereof,- and Fig. 3 is a plan or top view or" the same, the guard being opened from the bottom for the purpose of removing or replacing the glass globe. i
Similar letters ot' reference in the severalv iigures indicate the saine parts of my invention.
A represents the lantern-bottoni, in which Upon the top of the case A is fixed the annular plate E, upon which the annular flange J upon the lower end ot' the guard D rests, and over which it projects, as shown. The said tlange J is hinged to the plate E, or its equivalent, at a, and opens upon said hinge, as shown in Fig. 3, the opposite edges of the said flange and plate being held together by the spring-catch b c, d representing a thumbpiece, whereby the catch c is forced back in the slot s in the plate E to allow the guard to open, while the spring b holds the catch over the flange at other times, securing the guard to the bottom ot' the lantern.
The upper end of the globe C rests upon a plate attached to a spring,S, whose adjustability enables globes of different sizes to be used in the same lantern.
Having described the construction and operation ot' my invention, I will now proceed to specify what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent.
I claim- Hanging the guard of a lantern to the bottom casing thereofl and securing the parts together opposite the hinge by means of a catch orits equivalent, substantially as herein specified and shown.
