Candlestick. No. 50,708. y Patented Oct. 31, 1865.

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIC.
WILLIAM H. H. HINDS, OF GROTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN CANDLESTICKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 50,708, dated October 3l, 1865.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. H. HINDs, ot' Groton, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Adjustable Candlestick; and I do hereby declare that the followingis afull and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying` drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
In my improvement I use the Candlestick for holding the candle inside ot' a case made double thickness. The candle is pressed up by means of a spring inside ot' the case.
Figure l is a perspective view of the whole.
A is the Candlestick.
B is a frame slid down on the candlestck and resting on the base, or it may be left od when not in use. It is designed to be adjusted on the top ot' a Candlestick, as seen in Fig. 2, for the purpose ot' holding a vessel, with liquid or other matter, over the blaze to be heated. It is especially valuable'for the nursery.
G is a slide on the Candlestick, for the purpose of holding a reflector, D, which is raised or lowered in the slide E, and made fast by a wedge, set-screw, or other equivalent device.
Fig. 3 is a sectional cut ot' the reflector D, showing the relative position ot the glass F incased in the metal shield G, and a lining, H, ot' felt or other similar material, for the purpose ot'lessening the liability ot' breaking in case of a fall or other accident.
I I are two pieces of metal, made to close together around or below the blaze K, and are attached to a slide, L, on the top ot' the candlestick. The pieces opened or closed regulate the amount ot' air supplied for combustion, and therefore regulate the amount ot' light. One or more pieces may be used. The same device is applicable to and designed for any blaze for giving light. is especially valuable to be used in oil-lamps, saving the unpleasant odor so common when the light is reduced by turning down the Wick into the tube.
By these devices I have a new and improved adjustable candlestick. First, regulating the amount ot' light by the attachment I I; second, increasing the amount and regulating the direction ot' the light by the reflector D; third, using the candle tor heating liquids, &c., for the nursery or other places by means ot' the frame B attached to the top of the candlestick.
Vvhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The hand-regulator I I, for the purposes set forth.
WV. H. H. HINDS.
