LAMP.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 28,695, dated June 12, 1860.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, OLIVER SNOW and HERMAN S. SNOW, both of West Meriden, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lamps; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction, character, and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which make part of this specification, in which Figure l is a perspective view of the metallic cap, or top part of the lamp, with the glass chimney affixed, as when in use. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan of the same, cut vertically through the center, showing the relative position of the several parts.

Our improvement consists in securing the glass chimney in its proper position, on the top of the lamp, by means of springs attached to the deflector, which operate within the lower end of the chimney, by which the chimney will be held so firmly that it will never rattle, while there is not the slightest danger of the chimney bein broken by the expansion, or contraction, of the glass, as it has no outside support.

We make the top of the lamp of sheet brass, or any other suitable material, in the usual form, or otherwise, substantially, as represented in Fig. l, and indicated, in section, in Fig. 2. The lower part, A, (which is to be cemented to the lamp,) has a female screw, in the ordinary way, as indicated at b, b, Fig. 2, and the upper portion, (which contains the wick tube, and air passages, as shown at B, Figs. 1 and 2,) with a male screw, as indicated, in section, at b, b, Fig. 2, in the usual way, or otherwise.

We make the deflector, C, Fig. 1, of the ordinary shape, with spaces, or slots, in the rim, which pass onto knobs, or buttons, as shown at a, Figs. 1 and 2, to secure it to the cap when in its place for use.

To the upper portion of the deflector, C, we attach springs, as shown at 0, 0, Figs. 1 and 2, to secure the chimney, D, in its place, for use. Any convenient number of springs may be used, and, they may be attached to any convenient part of the deflector, but we recommend two springs, attached as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.

To use our lamp, we pass the Chimney, D, over the springs, c, c, on the deflector, as shown in Fig. 1, light the wick, d, place the rim of the deflector on in such a position that the spaces, or slots, will pass onto the knobs, or buttons, as shown at a, Fig. 1, and at a, a, Fig. 2, and adjust the Wick to the proper height, by means of the thumb-piece, E, when the whole will appear as represented in Fig. 1, and be ready for use.

The advantages of our improvement consist, in that, by using the springs inside of the chimney they are entirely out of the way, intercept no light, and hold the chimney perfectly steady, and yet, have no tendency to cause the chimney to break by the expansion, or contraction, of the glass; and, in that chimneys may be used varying considerably in diameter, by simply adjusting the springs, to suit it; and, in that there is no vertical projection at the bottom of the chimney to obstruct the downward light, and to be in the way; and, in that the chimney and deflector may be taken off together by applying the thumb and finger to the rim, 6, (which will always be 0001,) while in all others the chimney, and deflector, must be taken off separately, and this may be often necessary when they are too hot to be handled with safety; and, in that the chimney, and deflector, are put on together, it may be done so quick that they will not get smoked; thus aflording a neater, and more convenient, chimney lamp than has ever ben heretofore known.

WVhat we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The method of securing the chimney in its position for use, by means of springs, attached to the deflector, operating on the inside of chimney, so that no outside circle, points or other holders, are needed, when the whole is constructed, arranged, and fitted for use, substantially, as herein described.
