Description

Patented- March 9, 18.58
UNITED STATES PATENT ()FEICE.
I-IENRICH REIMANN, OF HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT.
APPARATUS FOR CONTAINING AND IGNITING CIGAR-LIGHTING CINDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 19,580, dated March 9, 1858.
To all whom. it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRICH REIMANN, of the city of Hartford, county of Hartford, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Machine for Containing and Lighting a newly-invented Article of Commerce called a Cigar-Lighting Cinder; and I do herebydeclare that the following is a correct description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of .reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the peculiar construction of several parts of said box.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
In the drawings, Figure '1 is an inside view of the box; Fig. 2, top view of the same.
Letter-A is the interiorcompartment of the box to receive the cinders; B, the top of the box; C, the sliding passage to convey the cinders under the friction edge to be ignited;
D, the toothed-edge friction igniter; E, the -thumb-piece to draw back the conveyer; F,
the spiral spring, G, the grate to holdignited cinder, and H the movable top to the same.
I construct the box of metal, similar in form as described in the drawings, but do not confine myself to size or shape if suitable for the purpose.
The cinders are an article of peculiarly inflammable composition expressly made for the purpose of lighting cigars, and are about the size of percussion-caps commonly used for fire-arms. I
In the body of the box A, Iplace anumber of the cinders, with their face upward, in the center of which face there is a small round raised dot composed of the phosphorus mixture. This dot is the igniting part. Then close and fasten the lid. When required to be used, the box is held in the hand with the round grated end G downward. The thu mbpiece E is then drawn back, which causes the circular sliding part or passage 0 to revolve and open a space sufficient to receive one cinder in the circular end of the slide. Then release the thumb-piece E, and the return of the circular slide 0, caused by the reaction of the coiled spring F, suddenly conveys the one cinder into the grated cavity G, which in its quick passage under the toothededge friction-piece becomes ignited by the tooth Y passing through the phosphorus dot on the center of the cinder-face. The cinder then flames up similar to a lucifer-match, and then dies out in about the same time as the flame of the match and leaves the body part of the cinder alive bright coal of fire without smoke or smell. This is the igniting-cinder, which will remain bright long enough to light one or more cigars before expiring. After the flame part has expired, to use the cinder the upper movable top of the grated cavity G must be drawn back to open it to insert the end of the cigar to be lighted by applyingthe same to the bright cinder. The ashes or refuse, if any, is then emptied; from the grated cavity, the top returned to its place. and the box to the pocket for future use. When the trigger E is released, the carrier C carries a cinder from box A around and under the toothed edge D, where it is ignited, while at the same time the ring I) closes the passage leading from box A, thereby separating the burning cinder from the cinders in box A, and as the toothed ring cl is secured to the same plateas ring b, and the teeth on said ring mesh into the teeth of ring a, the latter is turned and. the passage leading to the grate G is'opened and the cinder can pass to said grate to burn out. Bythis arrangement one of the two passages described is constantly closed, thereby preventing any accident in using this box.
Having thus fully described the nature of my invention, what I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the conveyor C and ringb with the toothed edge D and the toothed ring a, constructed and operated substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
